Hello!

Today's the day that the monthly question thread goes live. Things asked here will get an answer near the end of June in a recorded Q&A session (with a text transcript). You're welcome to ask about past, present, and future GB Patch projects, as well as the company itself.

Small disclaimer and guidelines:

1. Please don't reply to other people's questions even if you know the answer. The fun of joining a Q&A is that the developer can give a direct response to you and that everyone else also gets to hear/see the answer in the end of the month post. Having another player resolve the question in the comments right here might not be what the asker was hoping for. This thread is more about having a good time rather than looking for an immediate response to an important question. And if you do have a question you want to hear about right away, it's best to ask in some other thread or to message me directly.

2. I'm afraid questions about what scenes/choices Our Life: Now & Forever will include aren't answerable right now. Most of the details are decided as the game is created and currently I'm only writing the prologue of Step 1. So, I can't answer questions relating to what for sure will or won't happen past that point. I do know some things coming later, but only a small fraction of the whole game.

3. The questions can't be about more serious/potentially upsetting topics because I don't want those listening to suddenly be surprised with something they might not have been prepared for/want to be confronted with.

4. Please keep the questions here to things that wouldn't be really hard to tackle in an off-the-cuff, spoken out loud kind of Q&A, aha. Questions about every single character in a game or wanting an entire scene described aren't super doable in this situation. 

You can always send me questions outside of the audio Q&A if they wouldn't work here!

Hello! First of all I just wanted to say that I finally had time to play through the Baxter DLC recently and I noticed a lot more humor sprinkled throughout; I am unsure if this was intentional but I appreciated the extra effort as it made the game just that bit more entertaining and full of personality. :) I've also really appreciated how much more time we got to spend with Terry and Miranda in Baxter's DLC, and it's gotten me a bit more curious about Terry's gender. I appreciate that he's generally a pretty funny, upbeat guy who wouldn't bring up more serious topics like gender during the wedding, but I found myself curious about his process of discovering who he was. How and when did he realize he was trans? Does he plan to physically transition in the future? Does he relate to labels like "transmasc" as well as trans man? I understand that he is still a side character and it's possibly that you haven't fully planned out answers to all these questions. Either way, thank you for the consistent inclusivity that your games provide!

Is a ‘contesting’ relationship mildly antagonistic? Like for if you wanted to go for a rival/crush relationship. Or is it more like “we’re still friendly but I’m in charge”? Also how would Cove at 13 or older react to babysitting a child/children?

Hello! Thank you for doing these monthly Q&A's. They are much appreciated and very interesting. :D Now, this is a really silly question that perhaps can't be answered, but I was wondering: In OL2, hypothetically of course, could Cliff from OL1 be the biological father of the MC? Or would that at least be possible to headcanon? And if that could be plausible, how would Cove react to the news? For my second question, I'd like to ask if you maybe have any ideas regarding the future jobs of the OL2 LI's? If you have any then you don't have to say what they are, it would be just as fun to speculate as well!

So, I know it isn't an option in game but how would each of the OL1 LI react if they were in love with an MC that didn't return their feelings?

First I wanted to say that Our Life is an amazing game. The storylines are so heartwarming without having to worry about stumbling into a bad ending for answering options honestly as your/your character would. It’s wonderfully relaxing. (1) None of the three summer boys seem to be shy about display of their bodies (chests in particular). But I wonder about how bashful Qiu would/wouldn’t be considering their struggles with gender identity. Does it depend on their stage? (2) Everyone seems to wear PJ’s in the game. I was surprised at Baxter wearing them. He initially struck me as a sleep-in-his-boxers type of guy. Is it because of his tendencies toward formality? And since I’m asking the question, for Cove does it tend to be a texture thing—the bedsheets being uncomfortable against his skin? Or for a sense of security? (3) You mentioned on Tumblr that Baxter would only wear something other than formalwear if he was doing something sporty. What would that “something sporty” tend to be? And what would he wear? (I’m dying to know!) (Sorry about so many. I’ve been saving them for official Q&A time)

I wasn’t around until the Derek DLC was in development, so I was curious how things are going to work with Now & Forever. Do you write all ten of a Step’s Moments before moving on to the next Step or do you complete all of the base game stuff before going back and making the DLC moments?

Since Halloween will be making an appearance in OL2... What are Tamarack and Qiu's (plus the other kids if you want) favorite treats to get in their buckets? And what do each of the parents (or grandparents) like to give out to the kids?

Would any of the OL1 boys be willing to play a tabletop RPG (like DnD) with the MC if they asked him to? As well, which ones do you think would enjoy it the most? (U don't have to read the rest of this comment out loud lol) (Ngl I can kinda see Baxter being interested at least, considering he really liked that interactive play in the Drinks moment, and a lot of the core game play of TTRPGs is using one's imagination and playing a character in a cool setting ^-^) ( I can totally see Baxter playing as a bard and making liberal use his seductive skills, Derek would be a paladin who looks out for the group and tries to keep em out of trouble, and Cove just doing his own thing as some kind of aquatic druid or other magical class, haha. It's okay if you don't know a ton about TTRPG stuff, this is more just a general question to see if they'd be interested in the concept).

Going to try and get the courage to ask questions... Thank you for making these games :) 1. Obviously the Khaki shirt was not supposed to be there-- what would Baxter's normal hiking shirt(s) look like? 2. I know there's no specific date for moments in Steps, but I was curious if there was any dates (or even general timelines) for like... Steps as a whole? Like... randomly throwing ones out for OL1, but late May or late June to late August or early September or something. ^^; OL 2, I would guess is more September-sometime in November or Early December. 3. We never get a birthday moment for the MC for obvious reasons, but what would the love interests do to celebrate (if anything) if it was around while they were there? (I guess Cove, Qiu, and Tamarack are always there, but well, Derek was primarily just Step 2 and 4 and Baxter is primarily just Step 3 and 4 so ^^;) 4. What exactly about Jude's and Scott's words to Baxter about the MC caused him to finally stop his avoidance tactics? Sorry if I didn't explain my questions very well and for the length x-x Thank you for taking your time to do this whether mine get answered or not. I hope you have a nice vacation!

I have two questions: Where did Jude and Scott go for their honeymoon? 😁 How would Cove, Derek and Baxter go about telling their family MC was pregnant? Like who’s doing a massive reveal or just saying it suddenly 😂 (Trying to write some fanfics 😋)

I'm happy we will never see Baxter's parents in the OL universe. I have couple of questions regarding Baxter tho: Even if we will never meet Mr and Mrs Ward, will we ever visit Baxters "cool" house in OL2? How did Baxter's upbringing affect him growing up? For example, did he ever tell about his feelings for Qiu to his parents or is his inability to make and maintain connections something he got growing up in their care (or lack thereof)? Ty for your team's hard work!

Thank you so much for all your hard work! OL1 was a blast and I can't wait to see more of OL2! Now onto my question: I am curious about the "best friend" mechanic. In the 2023 May QA, it was said that the bff system is to pick a favorite. Does it mean that if I want to romance one of the LIs I have to pick them as my bff first? For example: would I be able to pick Tamarack as my bff but pursue Qiu romanticaly or by not picking Qiu I would potentialy lose special scenes with them?

First things first, thank you so much for all your work in making such amazing games! I have a few questions: (1) Will Opal ever find a partner during the game?, (2) Is there a point in time during the year where Tamarack’s parents come and visit her?, (3) How long will the kickstarter run for?, and finally (4) Does Opal have any family outside of the MC? Hello GBlady! Thank you very much for making these amazing games <3 I immensely enjoyed Baxter's DLCs and have some questions: 1. It seems like in the gap between step 3 and 4, he slowly grew out of his monochrome phase and even changed his view from cutting everyone off to longing for connection. Exactly when did Baxter start to feel guilty and wants to make amends instead of avoiding people and MC? What exactly is the turning point? 2. Bax mentioned that he hasn't been in contact with his parents for a while now, and I'm curious when and why he started doing that when he was just fine with them in step 3? 3. Bax seems very touched by mc's actions as we continue to reassure and include him throughout the summer, and at one point it seems like he's very much in love with MC, yet he was still committed to his plan to end it after summer is over. Was there an incident in the past that led Bax's belief that things must go according to plans? Or is it an effect from how he was brought up in his family? 4. Why did Bax continuously bring up the past in step 4 even though he initially refuses to have a talk with MC? 5. Is there a photo inside the picture frame we gave him? If yes, what is the photo? I have a question about the voiced names. My main MC (Angela) is a voiced name and I’ve made sure to select it from the choices, but for some reason it doesn’t work in Step 4 or the Wedding DLC. Is there a reason for this?

Hi! I love Our Life so much. I have a two parter: How would Baxter react if the MC were to ghost him the same way he did when he was 19 after they got together after a season? (Especially after how the dlc ended) What instruments do you think the love interest of OL1 would play?

Honestly, I’ve been loving the Baxter DLC soooo much I honestly was holding off from playing the epilogue/step 4 demo because I love him so much and wanted the full experience. But after playing I do have some questions about him mostly. We know Baxter thinks about Qiu, Renee, and possibly the MC and thinks they were wonderful people. But I was wondering do they miss him too? What would a reunion with them as adults look like? (is that something that could possibly happen in OL:N&F?)What would Qiu and Renee’s thoughts be on how Baxter viewed himself in their friendships? Also on a more headcanon-y note I know it could be possible that the two MC’s could be related like even possibly be half siblings through their biological father but how would characters react to something like that? I mean mostly Baxter since he’s probably the only person who knows them both(that we know of at the moment) but Cove, Derek, Qiu, Tamarack, and Renee aswell.

Hello and thank you so much for your hard work on the OL series! I am sorry if these have been asked already. Q1: How do you come up for the LI in your games? Are these characters your type/interest? Q2: For OL N&F will there be additional LI's with DLC? Q3: What series (even the ones you're currently working on) has proved to be the most challenging overall? and finally Q4: Do you think there would ever be additional content for Derek and Baxter to have a wedding or any type of content as an anniversary event down the line for any of the characters in OL B&A? Cove is my number one, but I felt so bad I couldn't marry Derek like we promised when we were kids and Baxter when I see his eyes light up when I ask what he plans for his wedding! I know its greedy to ask for more, but I truly love the series. I would be willing to pay any price needed for my greed haha! I enjoyed every part of it :) Q1 I know it's a lot early to ask but is there a possibilty of Baxter being the wedding planer of OL2 wedding DLC?or at least appear as a wedding guest Q2 Is Baxter drunk driving in the step 4 bar scence????? Q3 Do Renee and Baxter dress up for halloween in OL2 step1? Maybe not because they are older than us...If they don't what did they do when they were younger?

I wish I'd had something like this when I was a younger teen, so thank you a million times over. You're amazing :D Sorry if these questions have been asked, but: Q1. As someone who loves creating characters and storylines, I'd love to hear a little bit about your process of Cove coming to be. He's such a loveable and well written relatable character. Did you start creating him a long time before the game? Or did he sort of grow with the production of it? Q2. I would love to hear your personal favorite moment(s) of Our Life 1, whether with Cove, Derek, Baxter, or anyone! Hearing you talk about the things you enjoy is always really fun. Hi! Hope you are doing well ! Thank you for your work and for answering my last questions. I'm sorry to always ask questions that are to early to answer at the moment, hopefully this one will not ^^' (sorry again if it is...) : In the prologue, there is a moment where we get to choose if we came with our bike, if we decide that our MC doesn't know how to ride a bike or just don't like it. Is it going to change how Qiu sees us, as he is the biking king? Thank you for your answer! I wish you a beautiful day

I remember seeing a screenshot with Qiu where you can go from neighbors to friends depending on the choices. And how you can become best friends with Tama in the prologue. So would that work with crushes too? Like you go from friends to crushes in the middle of a moment?

What types of shoes do Xavier, Jude, and Scott, as free and unique, like to wear? I really can't guess in Xavier's case, because I can imagine pumps, sneakers, or any kind of footwear suiting them.

Would Baxter's parents try to crash the wedding if he and the MC decided to get married sometime down the line (this being a situation where they somehow found out about it and where it would be held). I know he said he thinks that they are giving excuses as to why they are not talking, and not being at his wedding would likely bring up an unavoidable conversation with their social circle.

Hi GB! Love everything to do with Our Life 2. I wanted to ask about The relationship dynamic system. I know we are only step 1, but just in general. In step 1 you’ve said Tamarack and Qiu act to MC how they act to all new people. Is there meant to be a certain settings for future steps that are how the characters “really” act and the alterations based off of players choices or directly is more of our version. I guess how in prologue and step 1 Tamarack is contesting. She will do what she wants without waiting for approval. But say step 2 without player input would it change?

I saw the room customization and it’s adorable, and I was wondering if there would be any ocean themed decor? I know that was the theme of ol1 but it would be really cute and kind of like a reference to the previous game. i personally adore jellyfish :))

Heya, thank you for all the hard work you put in! Both Our Life games (even Our Life 2 which is only in beta), are incredible projects and you and the team have done amazingly. Thank you for that. As for my question, I was wondering why Liz feels sort of aloof to the MC? I get that she cares for the MC, but I couldn't ever gauge to what degree, or why she felt a bit distant to me sometimes. Not to say I don't love Liz, I was just a bit curious on how she feels about the MC.

After mulling over it for a bit I finally have a question! If, in Step 2, you aren't close to Qiu and you begin getting snubbed by them since they've closed off emotionally, does that mean they will be unable to be invited to the traditional diner scene or is there a way to establish a connection/friendship with them during that part if you aren't close? Hi! I have a question about how the jealousy feature is going to work; is it like the affection level where it needs to be mutual? Or is it more like the relationship dynamics where it can be asymmetric (MC is neural while the RO is jealous of, for example)?

I've noticed that in the OL/XOD universe, things like supernatural phenomena tends to be left open to the interpretation of the player. One particular example that comes to mind is Cala, the "psychic" that can predict and influence future events (at least to some degree). All that got me thinking: In the hypothetical scenario that Cala really is a legit "psychic", could one headcanon that their OL1/OL2 MC could be as well? Now obviously I know this isn't something that could be implemented into the games (it would certainly complicate things a lot lmao), but it does present some pretty interesting story ideas and relationship dynamics with the other characters. Basically, what I'm trying to ask is: Could one assume that Cala really does have supernatural psychic abilities? And if she does, would it be possible for other people in-universe (like the MCs of the OL games) to have similar powers as well? And finally, how would the OL love interests feel about such an MC? (I understand that this is kind of a broad question, and the OL2 cast may not be developed enough for you to answer for them yet, so it's okay if you can't give a very specific or detailed answer here. I'm mostly thinking of like, an MC with an uncanny ability to read people, a ridiculously accurate intuition, life events just seem to work out for them too often in ways that are too convenient, maybe even borderline telepathy/telekinesis, etc. Like nothing too crazy, but if you stick around them for long enough, you'll start to realize there's something going on with them that is Not Normal lmao)

How would Renee feel about the MC calling her "Wren" as a nickname? (Like as an offshoot of her regular nickname "Ren", basically, and also because birds are super cute and nature-y. It'd probably mainly be over text and in groupchats, since both Wren and Ren sound the same when spoken aloud, but she would know what the MC meant lol)

What would all the LIs (in 1 & 2) prefer to be called pet name wise?? Or would they not even want to and prefer their name/nickname? I think it would be adorable to have a scene where you could refer to them as a cute petname, kind of like the scene where you call cove “honey”

Since there wouldn't have official ones for Derek and Baxter (also seeing people's "preferences on specific circumstances" are fun) . And is it fine to share those mods on the internet (if was labeled fanmade)?

Hello! I’m not sure if this can be answered with how far OL2 is into development, so if it can’t you can skip this, but I was wondering if you’d have to ability to change how you feel about the LI’s in the game multiple times? For example, deciding at the start of step two that you would go from crushes -> friends, but maybe in the middle of gameplay, the MC regains that crush and goes from friends -> crushes?

So I was replaying the OL2 demo, and I absolutely adore how excited Tamarack get's about her and the MC having stuff in common, so when I realized that both my character and her had names that were also names for types of trees, I was a little sad that there's no option to point it out. But it got me thinking, what if we went a little more extreme, how would Tamarack react to meeting an MC who was also named Tamarack? Would she think it was super cool, or would that be a getting a bit too similar? Then extending it out how would Qui, Cove, Derek and Baxter all react to meeting a MC who had the same first name as them? (Sorry if the games do reference it, it felt kind of weird to actually make a character with the same name t test it)

I mean in his step 4, before MC is going to use guest room for sleeping, he says "I wonder if-" and then "We should get some sleep." later. If I'm not mistaken this scene takes place if we never date in step 3.
