We've got another new character for you to meet! You'll technically interact with him in Step 1 as an off-screen NPC with seemingly no importance, but once the next time period comes around he ends up as a staple member of the cast.

Mr. Yusuf works at, and then ultimately gains ownership, of the local diner that Opal and the MC begin to frequent after moving to Golden Grove.  He's laidback and humorous and knows a lot about a lot of things. It's always interesting to have a chat with Mr. Yusuf.

He was born intersex, was assigned female, and transitioned to male as an adult.

hmmm im getting Tyrion vibes from the sketch. Also I may be a little uncomfortable with this character. How much is their background going to matter / be focused on in the story? Passing mention? Player option to be more curious about it or not?

Jeremiah Mack

Ach i forgot enter equals post here, neways I was going to add Im sure you are aware that this character could really be boundary pushing for alot of people. Im an older member of the lgbtq community myself, and still sometimes feel akward trying to understand the choices and the issues that revolve around both the individual living those choices and those around them. It can be a very thorny issue that stirs up a lot of emotions all over the place. And I should also offer an apology up front for those who feel offended by my even asking. For what its worth i sat here for almost 30 mins trying to decide if I should even ask or not. Im not trying to offend, but I also know that sometimes, intentions do not matter as much as how something is perceived / taken.

All these amazing characters..makes me so happy!! Keep up the great work!! 🥰

Emma

I'm sorry, are you saying there is an issue with a transmasc character existing in this game? genuine question

sarah

excuse me, what? theres nothing wrong with being born intersex or being transmasc. what are you saying?

Jeremiah Mack

no Im not saying there IS an issue, or that there is anything wrong with how they were born, or what choices they have made for them self. I am saying that there are those who are certainly going to lack understanding, or worse knowingly and maliciously choose to take issue with a character like that. It worries me a bit and thats why I was asking how it will be handled in the game and how much choice the player will have in exploring said content.

Emma

Obviously I can't speak to how much this will be explored in the final game, but personally I think that if a player is going to be transphobic about this character, they aren't someone I want in the OL community anyway. OL1 already had a transmasc character with Terry, OL2 has a genderqueer LI and several other trans characters in the works, so I don't see Mr. Yusuf's gender being an issue (Also I do believe you didn't mean to offend, but I think it came off that way when you said in your original comment that the character makes you uncomfortable. That's all, sorry for the long comment :) )

I'm sorry, I'm a little confused on what you mean by how it's used in the story and don't want to misinterpret what you're saying. But the game is for queer people made by almost all queer people. I don't really have any interest in making the LGBTQ content avoidable for those who aren't at a point where they feel comfortable with it. *edit, pushed enter a little too early by mistake too, haha

All these hot adults we can't have. xD He looks good. c:

Oh my God I already like him, I feel like he will be a great person to talk too, I already love his personality and like the description say I feel like it will be really interesting to talk with him. I feel like (this is based completely on the vibes he give me) the classic old man who smoke with you and help the "problematic teenager" who doesn't know what to do with life and always talk with them and almost behave like a dad in a way, but more kinda like Arcane with Vi and her adoptive dad. Not completely like them, a bit more carefree but still similiar to their relationship. Yes, this was a totally random idea based on his appearance and the vibes he gave me but nothing more. I'm not saying he's someone who smoke, that was just a side detail that I thought would fit lol The short version would be that I feel like he would be a kind of paternal figure for the MC and I would really like to become friend with him when I can.

Jeremiah Mack

Thanks for the reply, and that tells me what I was wanting to know. So you are looking to push the boundaries with OL2 =)

Aetheries

I wouldn't call it pushing boundaries. It is simply not the job of an oppressed community to make others feel more comfortable for their existence. If you are indeed offended, this really seems more like a you problem than a them problem. Maybe take some time to figure out exactly why the mere existence of this character in your sight makes you feel so strongly that you would take the time to question them existing in a space designed by that very community. Especially when the result of removing said character means the continued erasure of an already under represented group so that they may be seen through the lens of your hypothetical discomfort.

He is our dad now. I don’t make the rules.

As someone who was born intersex, assigned female, and has transitioned to male as an adult myself, seeing representation like this means the WORLD to me. Thank you, from a very grateful 34 year old transman. -Adrian

Wow, just exactly what post are you responding to? 1. I never suggested it was anyones "job" never mind an entire communities responsibility to make others feel more comfortable with their existence (or anything else for that matter.) While the opportunity to do so is present in some form here in this situation, i never asked or demanded it be acted on. I was simply asking if the writers were aware and how they were thinking of approaching it. 2. I never said nor suggested I was Offended by anything, nor did I question the existence of this or any other character in the story. I was asking about the writers intentions around their choices concerning that character. The Meta if you will. At no time have I suggested the character should be removed or changed. 3. final point, and honestly the reason I bothered responding at all, seriously my hypothetical discomfort? Your response is nothing but a personal attack, the kind I had considered before posting my original question, and deciding it was worth the risk anyways to get a better understanding of what the authors goals were. If your response to something is to invalidate another persons feelings and concerns and accuse them of things they havnt done, then obviously there is an issue there. That said, Im quiet certain the issue isn't mine.
