one of my most favorite episodes of probably any tv show. my mom was a professional dancer and i've always grown up around ballet and contemporary dance and have such a respect for the emotions it can show. i want to embrace rob for this performance. it showed such genuine love, care, compassion. and frank's line at the end....i get chills every time

emily ღ

also i want to add, this shows just how much frank genuinely loves the gang. he says some wild stuff and can act like he doesn't but he is always there with them and for them and supports them. even if he doesn't understand, he still tries. he may not have been the best father figure as they were kids but now as adults, i think it's nice character development. mac's father didn't even want to try to get it. frank genuinely wanted to understand. even if he didn't, he still tried and eventually did. it was a beautiful moment. it's not a typical sunny episode, but it's a powerful one and i think it's good in its own rite.

i don't really "get" dance as an art form just doesn't really do much for me but the visuals and the lighting and all that is really nice and i appreciate it. Obviously not a particularly funny episode but that's okay. Trying new shit etc. Anyway 14 is a much more "traditional" season

You're right in that it's definitely a polarizing episode. Several fans didn't like it, for a lot of the reasons you stated at the end: too serious, didn't feel like Sunny, etc. But there are so many others, myself included, who just adore this episode and what it represents. I've seen several LGBT fans across several message boards go on record and say that this episode meant everything to them, so while it was a huge gamble to do something so wildly different from the usual fare, I personally think it paid off. Fun fact, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds are really good friends now; you may or may not have heard about the show Welcome to Wrexham--about a soccer team owned by the two of them. That whole friendship started because Ryan was so moved by this episode that he reached out to Rob, and they struck a great bond that's endured to this day. XD

who me

ok am I high, whats with that timer on the bottom of the episode? Is that how australians count time or something?

themoviejourney

Yes I didn't set the timer properly, only noticed about an hour ago. Will reupload at some point soon

The woman represented god and mac's religious beliefs and the dance showed how he was torn between his sexuality and his religion/god. In the end, he was accepted by god for who he was even though he was rejected by his father. Or maybe it was just about bangin' hoors. Honestly, I absolutely hate interpretive dance generally speaking, but I loved this episode. Also, they missed an opportunity to throw in someone saying "what is happening" during the start of the dance.

Katzchen1984

I've always been torn on this episode.... I feel like its a pretty mediocre episode and it is very out of place for the show. However the ending of this episode and a few moments even tho they are out of place always feel pretty touching. I'm totally fine with them trying new things once in a while it kind of keeps the show from being stale. Also I forgot to mention season 13 is the worst for me along with 1... You really feel the lack of Dennis and they also have a lot of off beat episodes. Season 14+ is better than this one IMO.

yourcrookedteeth

it woulda been wild af if the network cancelled the show after this finale.. chess match episode

unpopular opinion but this is my least favorite episode. it just isn't sunny. not one laugh maybe a chuckle at cricket's appearance. frank's bloody nose was lazy they did that gag already. i'm gay and i hate gay mac lol i feel like they just don't know where to go with his character after this. as satire it worked much better having him be in denial, that was always a big part of his personality. they kinda retconned the character around season 9, he went after girls in the past he just seemed to have some latent homoerotic tendencies he denied. which is just funnier and more in line with his character. i know he's got 2 moms and that's cool but this episode felt more ego based. he wanted to shoehorn in his ridiculous body he achieved with his hollywood trainer (maybe some juice?), showoff what an ally he is, it just comes across as self-serving. yes the dance was impressive i get why its touching but it just doesn't belong in the show. danny devito "i get it" is sooo corny it hurts to watch. something about the line mac says "i just don't know where i fit in as a gay man and its starting to get to me" really irks me as well. i'm gay but i dont base my whole identity around it. you fit the same place you did before. LGBT isn't a monolith or an actual community, whatever's goin on with the pride parades or official lgbt groups has been hijacked by corporate/political interests. we're just a random smattering of a small percentage of the population with wildly different views and likes etc. we don't all like musicals lol it's like they just turn him into a stereotype after this.

For the record, Rob McElhenney has two gay brothers, and his mother came out as lesbian after divorcing his father. I take this as his way of showing how tough it is to be raised Catholic while also having a majority of your family being LGTBQ. There's not a lot more of this type of episode in Sunny but it seems very important to him to get this message across.

blitzø

This is a really bad look. You seem to be pretty resentful of your sexuality, bro. Yes, corporations selling pride shit under the banner of allyship is a crock of shit, but theres nothing wrong with being loud and proud about your sexuality. Bitching about people who "base their whole identity" around it is literally conservative rhetoric. You can act like you're above it all and one of the "normal" queers all you want but it's not gonna matter to those that think homosexuality is a crime against nature. We're all on the same team.

Cade Soergel

I’ve seen all 16 seasons. Though some are stronger than others overall, there does not exist a season without at least a couple bangers on it. Very few that are straight up bad, but it’s one of the most if not the most consistent comedy series ever made.

jenlight

If you forget this is Sunny, that dance is pretty amazing and I'm not a fan of interpretive dance. It just doesn't feel like a Sunny episode. Yes, it is 100% the most polarizing episode by far.

Preston Goins

I thought it was a beautiful episode

Sonya Anzaldua

Several LGBT fans have stated that they related really deeply with Mac's plotline, and it's not right for you to invalidate their experiences just because the episode didn't resonate with you specifically.

emily ღ

you've brought up rob's body/physique (and kaitlyns as well) multiple times. i never once thought this dance was a chance for him to show off his body. in contemporary dance many male dancers are topless. it has to do with the rawness and vulnerability of what's being shown.

David Corica

Here's the thing, after 13 years, and the ups and downs of losing Dennis for half a season, the writers have earned the right to try new things, and play with the format of the show. Totally fine with it. I dont love this episode. Feels corny and forced, and definitely not like "classic sunny", but this episode is also not really made with me in mind, and Im happy that other people like it. If the show continued like this Id likely lose interest, but I have no issue with taking chances in general and pushing the limits of what the show can be. This one makes my bottom 10, but as I always say, Id still take bottom tier sunny, over the best of most other shows.

Corey

I think the peaches are a nod to "Call Me By Your Name", iykyk haha

Jolene Annunziato

I love this episode for the message and the dance. I don't mind when shows do different things usually. I like when the creators get to explore different genres and ideas, a lot of times it can lead to some really good discoveries (I think of the "chicken mafia" episode of Community giving birth to imitating movies/genres). That said I totally get people who don't like that. If you just want a normal episode of Sunny, I get why the experimental episodes don't work (stuff like "Gangs Crack the Liberty Bell", "Franks Brother", "Unnamed S14 episode" etc.). I think S13 is the worst of all the seasons, and I still watch most of it on rewatches. Sunny is just too good.

GM Jim

The tone of the show has changed over the years. I like that they do the odd personal eps from time to time now.

Bekka Paul

Am I the only person that assumed Mac was for SHUUUURRRRRR fuckin the peaches??????

Boing

That acting from Danny D at the end there though.

Shane Jeffery

Come on Sigur Ros are not gay

Will Fly

It was personally very important to Rob McElhenney that this episode be made. His mother is gay (as is his stepmother whom his mother is married to), and he also has two gay brothers. And I think he heard some homophobic comments from fans about Mac (because they were stupid and thought that was the point of disliking Mac), or he caught wind that people were calling the show homophobic (because they’re too stupid to get that’s not the point of the character). So he wanted to make it clear that the gang’s frustration with Mac isn’t because he’s gay, but because he fights who he truly is. The dance is meant to represent Mac’s internal struggle between his sexuality and his religious beliefs. A lot of the dancing is pretty aggressive, and involves a lot of pulling each other in and pushing each other away. Rain almost always represents an internal struggle. God is a woman because Mac is afraid that if he rejects women, he is also rejecting God, and the only way to be accepted by God is to marry a woman and live a traditional lifestyle. In the end, he strongly and boldly holds God above his head because he has found a way to be proud of both his faith and his sexuality. That’s years of production work in modern dance performances put to work, thank you very much.

blitzo - i'm not resentful of my sexuality, what i resent is how it's co-opted for cynical corporate and even creepier CIA culture war divide and conquer tactics. last time i went to pride it was sad. all corporate, soulless ads everywhere and a table for israel (not for palestine). and i'm cool with conservatives even though i've always been very left. communism traditionally is quite conservative. i think it actually is helpful that some of us are reaching over and making friends across these ridiculous left right barriers, which is just a way to divide the working class. my interests as a gay man are completely different from mainstream gay culture, but i really think all we have in common is who we like to sleep with. yes in the past with stonewall there was actual rights needing to be fighted for. in 2024 in most of america being gay is seen as quite cool. 20-30% kids now identify as some LGBT. there is a lot of misunderstanding on both sides and i think breaking down left vs right barriers is far more important than focusing on identity over economics. that's the trap. i'm perfectly proud of who i am but it's just not relevant when EVERYONE like 80% of us live paycheck to paycheck and can't afford healthcare. i'm focused on affecting change that will benefit all of us gay straight black muslim jewish etc hyper focus on identity is amplified by the media to divide

Russian Paul

sonya - i'm gay, i have a right to my opinion. i'm not invalidating anyone else, but who are you to invalidate LGBT who have opposing views? we're all grownups we can have our own opinions and debate them and that's fine

Russian Paul

emily - well i definitely think ego was involved, rob got insanely ripped, other than that both him and caitlyn have had extensive plastic surgery to the point of looking like AI and they're now less funny as a result. they don't look like their characters. but the dance on its own, i can respect, it's just not the sunny i want to see

Jay Willis

Thanks for your input Paul. I disagree with your take, but found it an interesting counterpoint to hear. I'll disagree that they retconned his character in Season 9. There are a few small things sure, but Mac was with Carmen ("the Tranny") back in Season 1. As time has gone on, he has evolved like a lot of people do. So many people struggle with who they are and don't realize they're gay for years. Mac has also always, 100%, tried to cling to some kind of identity, whether it's Irish, Catholic, or Gay. Not everyone does this, but some people do, and Mac is one of those people. I get that it doesn't resonate with you, but it clearly resonated with a lot of others. "something about the line mac says "i just don't know where i fit in as a gay man and its starting to get to me" really irks me as well. i'm gay but i dont base my whole identity around it" I'm surprised at your comment above. Mac is saying he doesn't know where he fits in the gay community, because he doesn't fit into some of the specific sub-cultures that Frank is pointing out (Drag Queens, S&M, pride parades, etc), and I read your response as kind of rejecting Mac's feelings as believable for a gay man to have (correct me if i'm interpreting your response incorrectly). As I mentioned above, he's always clung to religion in the past. Part of his struggle is as he realizes he's gay, he doesn't know where he belongs. That is literally the point of this episode, Mac struggling with his religious convictions and how they don't agree with his sexuality. His dance is about him finding faith that God will accept him and love him unconditionally for who he is, rather than condemning him like his father does. Just my .02. Always appreciate a healthy debate.

Jay Willis

Late to this one, somehow I missed when you guys released the episode. I personally love this episode. I don't like the Frank bleeding stuff, but I love the message of the episode and find the dance incredibly meaningful. For a show that is 99% of the time trying to make you laugh out loud, to pull out an incredibly emotional moment and put together a really well thought out and choreographed dance scene was great to me. I get if people believe it doesn't feel like Sunny. That's fine. But IMO for a show with 13 seasons (at the time) to spend an episode on this is 100% worth it and honestly refreshing. I think if they had found a better B Plot with Frank's nosebleed, maybe found a different gag or plot point it would've been better. But most people just found it gross instead of funny.

Russian Paul

thanks for the cordial response Jay. as far as retconning...not to get too into the weeds with this...i think there are plenty of examples where mac went after girls not to impress anyone, and when no one was watching. it definitely didn't read like he was 100% gay more bisexual and in denial about that aspect of himself. it was around season 8 and 9 he started saying more things about fully hating women and now he's like grossed out by them. to me his latent feelings and denial was so much funnier. that's what made those scenes when he would almost try to kiss dennis so hilarious, like even mac didn't realize his own feelings. about the comment mac said about not knowing where he fits in as a gay man...it felt like something a straight guy would write. in 2018 or whenever this came out especially in coastal cities like philly he can just be gay and not have to fit into some subculture. like when i came out none of my interests or friends changed. well a few stopped talking to me and i heard them talking behind my back and that sucks but that's part of life and growing and finding who you're real friends are. i guess from a young age i've always been really turned off by LGBT mainstream culture. i remember at 13 watching will and grace and thinking it was a modern day gay minstrel show lol in terms of seeking community and support sure fine. but just the way he phrased it bugs me for my own idiosyncratic reasons i guess. yea i get his religious and gay sides battling it out, kinda feels like they beat us over the head with the metaphor lol i do agree that mac always struggled with identity and that aspect of his character does work with this version of mac like in season 15. but i'll just reiterate most of us don't watch sunny for character growth. as satire closeted mac worked better

Norias

You guys trying your hardest to decipher the episode at the end was really funny. I personally hate this episode more then every other episode because it kinda goes against everything they made a point that the show is about. They had a whole episode about how they'd never have an oscar bait episode, they'd never have any Mac's actor specifically said they'd never have any 'very special' episodes.
