Hey everyone!

Here is your exclusive weekly patroncast, this time Episode 34!

In this one, I talk about:

- Audacity, and how it's not spyware, but I'm still going to look for a replacement

- Copilot, and how I don't think it infringing on licenses and copyright, but it's still unethical

- Quitting my job, and how I tried to tease this at the beginning of the episode, but I gotta include it in here so you guys know what you're walking into

I hope you'll enjoy listening to it!

Hey Nick, What bothers me most about Copilot is the "Improve suggestions" arrow drawn in the "How it works" diagram (going from private code to Copilot service). Feeding AI on open source code in public repositories : shitty but why not. But if I'm using this service while working on a private project for my company, I guess this extension will feed on how I code, how I edit the suggestions, also feed on my company "business logic" ?? Or is it just restricted to public/open source GitHub repos ? As for you job, it came as no surprise as you seemed more and more inclined to go full LTE and I think most people here are glad that you'll making more amazing content. So in a nutshell : congratulations ! Can't wait for the new stuff. Funny timing, I also sent my resignation today and will be starting a new job at the beginning of October too. And I'll be working on... mac 😁. That's a good thing that you go full TLE, I'll be needing my Linux fix more often as my new workstation won't be on Linux anymore !

Ohhh nice coincidence! Working on Mac is alright, but it’s no Linux 😁 Yeah, I’m excited for October to start really digging into these projects and improving the video quality, trying out new stuff, it’s going to be fun (and scary) :) As per Copilot, I don’t know if they’ll also train it on restricted repos, I’d say they won’t, but who knows!

Audacity is not directly spyware. But indirectly, because they're being super vague about why they collect this data and why they share it with other countries. Only reason I can think if is that they took over Audacity not really knowing anything about FOSS Or the philosophy behind it. So all they saw was easy money and possible dollar signs. Hence why the first thing they did was implementing ways for them to see how many users they have. Audacity is gonna go the way of OpenOffice. A new fork (such as Audacium) will take off and become better than Audacity due to all the new traffic. I personally like Audacium because it's not just a copy of Audacity. They've actually implemented some pretty neat features. Dark mode by default, for one. A new modern looking theme (not the default one) and the ability to set up to 20 sound wave colors rather than 4 − which is nice if you're working with a bunch of different tracks.
