Hey everyone!

In this one, I'll talk about the performance of the channel, pretty bad for July, a few reasons why this might be, and also trying to find ideas to get out of the creative routine I feel I've fallen into, trying to find more interesting, less "already trodden" paths for the channel.

Would love your feedback on all of this!

Have a great week!

One thing that makes listening to the daily podcast awkward-- leading to me listening less-- is that YouTube's mobile app on Android will pause the podcast video if the screen is locked. So I have to leave my phone sitting somewhere, or very carefully avoid touching any part of the screen, during the podcast. (This is the case even with YouTube Premium; where normally YouTube videos don't pause when the screen locks.) And I don't have the Patreon app, because I prefer to keep the number of unique apps installed to a minimum. Additionally, I can't easily queue anything else to listen to when it ends, if I'm doing a task which would warrant that (and I don't want to keep my screen unlocked, risking random button presses and just generally burning more battery). As opposed to if it could be accessed with Podcast Addict, so I could queue up Radiolab, Ologies, or whatever else alongside it.

Hi, this might be a bit off topic but if you are on Android I highly recommend you an app called GrayJay which is an all in one app developed by Futo foundation. Using GrayJay you can have youtube with no ads and also add your Patreon account and listen to daily podcasts with no interruption

Hi Nick, a couple of spontaneous thoughts: 1) Based on my understanding of how YT works, I think your hypothesis regarding getting less recommendations because of 2 videos below a certain likes/dislikes ratio is very plausible. 2) Rationally speaking, your video debating desktop metaphor wasn't negative at all. But it was likely guilty of offending some people's ignorance. Firstly, I'm sure some (not too sophisticated) viewers might have struggled to understand what you are actually talking about; secondly, some might have thought you are suggesting they are not sophisticated enough if they don't have a problem with a classical desktop concept. Both reactions equally silly, but I'm sure they were real. 3) I personally enjoyed the controversial projects video. But you surely got the flak from the fanboys of respective projects. There was probably no way to do this kind of a video and avoid this. 4) How about another small series along the lines: "This used to be my issue on Linux and here's how I dealt with it"?

Hi Nick! I'd definitely watch videos explaining current trends/challenges in the FOSS world, e.g. "Why is FOSS lacking developers/maintainers?" (if that's in fact the case) or "Does FOSS lead to more secure software?" etc. You could summarize the state of knowledge/research on those topics, perhaps even with some brief comments from people in the know? Oh, and I've always enjoyed your hardware and distro reviews, by the way!

Hi Nick, First thing... I do not watch your videos anymore. I listen to the podcasts instead (don't know if I am the only one who does that). Second thing... on topics. I wish you could make videos on software but that would help choose some alternatives. For example office suits - what are differences between them? The same with terminal apps, mail apps, file managers etc. Just take top 5 most popular and show how they are different. Another topic is hardware, namely laptops. You have plenty of reviews and comparisons for Windows laptops or Macbooks, but not much comparisons for Linux laptops. Review is not the same as comparison. And to be honest... I haven't event clicked the video on desktops you've mention in the podcast... not my cup of tea :D. All the best!
