Hi Nick, Love your work - as you can tell, I'm here on Patreon - and listen to your Daily News every day. However, I sometimes find the substitution of personal opinion for facts a bit tiring. Saying that MATE is "just not on the same level as what GNOME ... offers" is just a vacuous statement, insofar as MATE works efficiently for a lot of people. Same with Xfce. One could equally well say that the GNOME experience is constrained and limiting. I have used MATE on a daily basis since around the time of the first releases, and I use it for academic research (biophysics), software development, graphical design, leisure, what have you. And I’d say it’s efficient for my work flows. I do have a recent-ish Thinkpad running the GNOME desktop that I use once in a while – and my wife uses GNOME on her laptop – so I stay on top of the current state of GNOME, but do not feel enticed to use it as a daily driver. Just a little complaint – as a Frenchman, I’m sure you’re used to it ;-) . Have a good day and keep up the – overall – fantastic work!

Hi! Thanks for the support, I totally understand where you’re coming from, I guess I should have been more specific: MATE is in fact lagging behind GNOME and KDE on certain areas, like Wayland support, work on HDR, variable refresh rate, the fractional scaling protocol, and other things. I should probably have explained a bit more here :) I’ll try to make it more clear when it’s a personal opinion.

Gnome's devs "my way or the highway" attitude certainly explains why Gnome seems to be controversial in the Linux community sometimes. Other desktop environments will have to stop relying so much on gnome's ecosystem if they want to survive, but again, do they have the ressources to do? I hope so 😕.
