I thought this guy was one of the worst generals when I read military histories of WW1. Then I read up on the political history of the Empire, and there's also a very good chance that without him the Empire doesn't collapse when it does!

"The Habsburg Empire: A New History" by Judson (2016). The TLDR is they were managing their nationalities pretty well, in peacetime. The multilingual army is a prime example. Losing the war broke everything, and nobody contributed more to both starting and losing it than Conrad.
