Library worker here. The deal with e-lending is basically this: Library systems have to buy a certain number of licenses or licenses good for a certain number of "copies". Those licenses have terms. In the old system, when a Library buys a physical book it gets checked out or "circulates" as many times as it lasts. For a paperback it might be 20-50 times, for a hardback it might be 80-120 times. The books last as long as they last based on how they're made and how they're treated. With the rise of e-lending, publishers of course don't want to sell a Library a file and let that Library copy it for patrons as many times as it gets requested. They sell a license instead, and an electronic copy is only good for a certain number of digital check outs. It's a racket, and it's a bad deal for Libraries, but it's the way a lot of people read and nothing short of rewriting intellectual property law will fix the problem.

This is a gross oversimplification of how it works. There is nuance with different publishers, distributors, and platforms with how the whole e-lending thing works. And there are innovative Library systems that are finding a better way, but the problem is very huge and very annoying.

Listening to the discussion about "battle buddies" it occurs to me that the Army just went way out of the way to keep from using the word "comrade."

"Anyone who runs is a VC! Anyone who stands still is a well-disciplined VC!" Kubrick captured the universal attitude of the US military towards war crimes well.

To hear how undesirable orders to be a drill sargent is was really wild to me. In the Navy being a Recruit Division Commander is considered a massive career boost and is very selective and highly competitive. I wonder what the difference in how either branch incentives it is.

My friends and I used to have a bit torrent share folder with a big ass DRM-free library, it's a good thing if you can get it.
