Robert E Lee was a brutal slave owner, war criminal, and racist.

I went to school right outside of Richmond VA and if I were to show this to my history teachers 11/12 of them would have a stroke just by reading the title. I am so excited to listen.

Union Dixie vs Katyusha: Which slaps harder?

I wrote a whole novel and then deleted it. All my teachers knew Lee was a bitch but they all told us the yankees paid black folks to lie about Lee to justify the theft of Arlington. My home town is sort of a cradle of lost cause bullshit (and I learned it all) so this episode hits hard for me.

Seriously, from the outside looking in, it is bizarre that there are so many American military bases named after Generals from an army that fought against its own government.. Fort Bragg, Fort Beauregard, Fort Pickett, the list goes on... the white washing (pun intended) of history must produce significant cognitive dissonance for anyone trying to reconcile swearing to uphold the virtues of liberty while stationed at a base named after a slave holding rebel. It would be akin to a current member of the Bundeswehr being stationed at Camp Goebbels.

we agree entirely. Joe, Nick, and Rich spent a large chunk of their career's at a base named after a confederate traitor (John Bell Hood) . It is insane that in 2020 these institutions survive.

I grew up a little ways down 64 from there, and learned basically 0 about the civil war, which is arguably more dangerous. I was super interested in that era myself as a kid, but I lacked any kind of context when I learned about it, and was too young to have any kind of real perspective. The result was my own kind of mini-Lost-Cause, although without any overt (conscious?) racism. I hope.
