As someone who has worked on movies with fake babies, it's a very strange thing to see on set. You're right that they're basically a step up from your normal kids toy. There's a lot of ifs that rely on a fake baby looking convincing enough and that definitely wasn't how to do it. It is very funny watching people from props department carry these dolls around by the head or flail them around by the leg because out of the corner of your eye they look more real than you'd think.
