So with the new season comes a new version of the theme song, Way Down in the Hole. The version we heard in season 1 was performed by the Blind Boys of Alabama. This year’s performance is by Tom Waits, who wrote the song. The song is from his 1987 album Frank’s Wild Years. I’m going to presume that it is not much of a spoiler to say that each season gives us a different cover of the song. This season’s view of Baltimore is through the lens of Baltimore’s (predominantly) white working class and what has befallen these folk since the last quarter of the 20th century. The skyline around the harbor is dominated by the rusting hulks of closed factories, commented on in the opening scene where McNulty and his partner Diggins discuss which factories their fathers had been laid off from back in the 70s and 80s. This is contrasted by the yacht operated by a DC lobbyist only interested in keeping the party going.

Interesting you feel this season starts quick, usually people complain it takes a while to get going. (but I agree!)
