I think in the end, He didn't regress again. He decided that he wanted to "die as a good man, and not live as a monster".....He wanted to die as Teddy, the Marshal who was trying to help others. Rather than live as Andrew, the murderer.

I am not sure were along DiCaprio's timeline this movie was but he went on what seems like a ten movie streak where he was trying to win an Oscar, this being one of the films. DiCaprio finally got the award with 'The Revenant'. As for this movie I was waiting to see your reaction because you are never sure who to believe.
