Kadath has answered that previously: He follows the idea that if species are not cross-fertile in the real world they are not fertile in his - so a dog and a cat cannot produce a child, but a cat and a tiger might. Thus, for many pairings birth control isn't needed, and it appears STDs are much less prevalent in his world. But since Dazzler and her new friend are both reindeer, precautions are in order. I take the liberty of assuming that Dazzler is on birth control pills and simple wants "belt and suspenders redundancy", which is always a good idea.
