Wow. This is a side of Olivia we've never seen. I love it, though.

There are two different gut-responses that people usually show sympathy through. Extroverts: Offer responses of "I'm sorry", "I hope things get better", "it'll be okay", etc.; well wishes and sympathetic responses. Introverts: Offer responses of "I understand", "I've been through something similar/worse", "you're not alone", etc.; statements that focus more on the interpersonal aspect of the sympathy. And BOTH sides grate each other the wrong way. Introverts see extrovert sympathy as shallow and unconvincing, extroverts see introvert sympathy as trying to make it about them instead. What we have here, is Gabby's introverted sympathy clashing with Olivia's extroverted outlook.

Really interesting analysis! I admit I didn't think it through that deeply, kinda just going with my gut instinct on how these characters would behave, but it makes a lot of sense!

Ohhh Gabby. "I understand what it's like to have issues with family" is not the response to "my grandmother blames me for my dad's death".

Breaks my heart to see her in pain

You always have to be very careful when using the "I understand your pain because I experienced something similar" argument. Mainly you have to be sure they actually are similar. But you can never be 100% sure that the person experiences things the same way you do. Best thing to do is just provide reassurance that the person and their feelings are valid, and that you're there for them.
