at the moment its purely cosmetic but without going on a lore tyraid, most of the mutants garys mother creates are based on demons and gods her and her fellow occult doctors witnessed and interracted with when they would dose up on regeneration serums and commit suicide to visit the worlds beyond life. so this is probably one such demon she may have encountered and created her mutant strain to mimic it. im still toying around with it but feng xis mutation is demon based
