Getting Busy

I bet this is NOT the “good morning” picture you expected. Blame Sasha!

The Storylines are the heart of Ailana Geven Imagines, and they are found in the Collections section of the site.  Here are some of the most popular:

SUPPORT AGI WITH ONE-TIME TIP

My plans to meet @wendy_we4550 Wendy Wellington changed—we’ll do that tomorrow. So, last night, Sasha connected with a community action group that just-so-happened to have a neighborhood cleanup event today. She volunteered us to help.

There are several tasks. One group is picking up trash and putting it in bags. I’m in a group that is collecting bags and putting them in trucks. There’s another team at a nearby parking lot where there’s a bunch of dumpsters who are unloading the bags.

It’s really a simple plan, but the logistics must have taken a lot of work to set up.

Those of you who have been reading my posts for a while know that I am a strong believer in giving back to the communities we visit. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Most of the volunteers here were young people who had a morning they could give up to do something good. And, If you ask me, a lot of good is getting done.

I’ll check in with you to offer progress updates and let you know what the others are up to.

See you soon!

Stopping for Lunch

Geoni and Josh made their way to the park where the volunteers were being provided lunch. Josh motioned to one of the tables and they sat down.

Geoni was convinced that she was in the middle of something. Something she thought was good, and wonderful. She was enjoying every minute with Josh, whether they were picking up trash or out for dinner.

“We can wait here until the line goes down,” Josh said.

“Sure.” Geoni looked around and noticed Sasha and Ailana as they approached. “Hey, Josh…”

Josh turned to look at her.

“Before Ailana and Sasha get here, I wanted to say I’m…”

Josh waited but she didn’t finish the thought, so he responded. “I’m having a blast with you. I look forward to a lot more time doing things with you.”

Geoni nodded. “I was going to say something like that.”

Josh smiled. “I had a feeling. Thought I’d jump the line and say it first.”

Geoni couldn’t even think of words to express her reaction. She smiled as Ailana and Sasha reached the table.

“How did it go?” Sasha asked.

Josh nodded. “Good. I think we filled three of the pickup trucks.”

“We’re making a lot of progress, if you ask me,” Sasha added.

Geoni smiled. She agreed with Sasha’s claim, and it applied to more than just cleaning up the neighborhood, as far as Geoni was concerned.

Wrapping Up

I hitched a ride on one of the collection trucks in order to meet up with Sasha. I found her.

“Sasha,” I said, “why are you in the dumpster?

“It’s too full to close the lid. I’m packing it down.”

“You’re going to get hurt!”

Sasha frowned. “I’m being careful. I have a piece of wood under my feet.”

One of the dangers everyone had been warned about was “medical sharps.” All of the bags we picked up were bags the volunteers had filled. There were strict orders about what not to put in the bags.

Like many places where people struggle with the challenges of everyday life, this neighborhood was not without its share of illicit drug users. Contaminated needles, as in many places, present a real danger. Volunteers were told to flag any that were found, and someone would come around behind them with a sharps container to safely dispose of them.

I was glad Sasha wasn’t taking any chances. Despite precautions, it was conceivable that a dirty needle could have been inside some random fast-food bag that was put into the plastic garbage bags.

Many cities around the world offer clean needle programs for intravenous drug abusers. Cape Town has several harm reduction programs, including clean needle services for drug users. One notable program is the Step Up Project, run by TB HIV Care. Another organization, the South African Network of People Who Use Drugs (SANPUD), also supports harm reduction initiatives.

There is a misconception that these centers are just there to help drug users. While sharing dirty needles, indeed, presents a threat to the drug users, the discarded needles also present a real danger to people who might encounter them. Needle programs set out to curb the spread of HIV and Hepatitis.

“I’m pretty much done with this one,” Sasha said. “Help me get out.”

Goodnight

Well it was a good day. I always feel a sense of satisfaction knowing I’ve done something to help others.

I’ll be here in Cape Town a few days. There’s a lot to do, and we have to plan our trek north.

I also want to say that life outside of AI is about to crank up. However, I intend to try very hard to keep you informed about what is happening within the AI world. It’s possible you’ll notice some gaps. I can’t say that won’t happen.

Tomorrow is not too far away, so I’ll shut things down here and call it a day. I’ll post one more picture after this on Patreon for the Supporters.

Thanks to everyone who supports me and follows my antics. I truly appreciate all of the encouragement!

May you enjoy whatever part of your day is left and may your tomorrow be wonderful!
