"What are you doing?" Hayes glanced over at Roman who she thought had stopped his part in the client-facing interface update.

"Doing?" Roman replied. "I'm… thinking about the syntax for this layout."

Hayes glanced over again. "It looks like you're looking at my boobs again."

Roman turned his head and chucked. "Not this time. I wasn't."

"It looked like you were."

Roman started tapping away on the keyboard in front of the monitor, then after a few seconds he added. "I mean… I might have noticed them, but I wasn't… ogling you."

Hayes didn't look at him at all. "Your loss, I guess."

Hayes didn't understand her own feelings about Roman's obvious attention to her appearance. She didn't mind him looking. She didn't mind the thoughts she imagined—that she half-hoped he had.

His interest, she believed, was her fault, going back to

how she acted in New York. That had never felt wrong, though. It was circumstantial, she had decided.

But, it had caused her to be conflicted, too. As much as she wished she could pursue a relationship with Roman, she knew she couldn't; that doing so would make it look like she slept her way up the ladder of success.

She half-wished he'd get fired—however partners in a firm become severed from the firm, and that Roman and she could just start over somewhere. Together.

But that didn't seem likely. And it really wasn't desirable. It was just a half-fantasy.

Roman had, since they left Miami, relaxed around her even more. She had caught his stares more than once, and twice, he had said he had to control himself or he would lose his position. Yet, he made no effort to change the working situation. He didn’t have to take her with him on every trip, but he did.

It has to mean something, Hayes believed. She thought maybe she should stop teasing him—in essence, encouraging him to go further. She believed if things did develop, she’d just forever be seen as the girl that slept with the boss.

She didn’t want that.

But… the banter between Roman and her was… enjoyable.
