Sadly sm still treats EXO like a cash cow... just putting Baekhyun and Kai as an example: they are touring with EXO since July constantly and then had to at the same time prepare for SuperM’s debut and then they had a SuperM tour at the same time the EXO tour was happening. They don’t even let EXO properly promote their songs (MAYBE 2 or 3 music show appearance and almost no entertainment shows). For the amount of money EXO brings to sm, they’re really mistreated. This is only a really small fraction (what I just wrote) I’m sure others will add a lot of other things.

honestly that's why i had a hard time getting into them. The lack of entertainment shows and variety shows made it hard for me to get into their personality, cause 90% of videos (funny compilation videos, etc) were very old and repeating the same clips cause there are barely any shows to watch for them. It also felt like i never see them ALL together, it's always 6 or 7 members the past couple years, which made it hard to know every member :/ i still don't consider myself an exo-l cause i just feel like i don't know some of the members as well and i rarely get to see them.

This gon' be a freaking essay As a long time fan of EXO since their debut, and being a fan of other SM groups even before 2012, i'd say the situation REALLY improved now. I think 2012 - 2015 was probably their hardest (they seemed to be exhausted most of the time). I feel like from 2011 to 2015 SM in general was just being crazy with all their artistes - Girls Generation, SHINee, TVXQ etc. In 2016, EXO was still working like crazy, they had A LOT going on (individual activities, exo-cbx, lay's solo stuff, tour) but in general things seemed to get better. I'd say things got much much better 2017 onward. They seem to have time for themselves and each other, and could do their own thing. With regards to promotion, EXO receives very very little. SM knows the fanbase is big and loyal and that they'll get sales regardless of promo. They do this with TVXQ as well. TVXQ hardly has any promo/press and usually go on tours instead (they perform for an audience of over a million fans $$$$$). EXO hardly make any appearances on TV. EXO and TVXQ bring in the most revenue for SM Ent. Do note that EXO released Tempo in NOV and Love Shot in DEC. While EXO are literal rich kings, they do not earn much from pure album sales (in terms of profit margin). They earn more from other aspects of their career (endorsements, tours, solo activities like acting, musicals, producing, songwriting) which is why sometimes they tell us not to buy albums. They've made jokes where when hosts mention they just sold a million albums , they said, 'oh i didn't know because i don't see it in my bank account'. That being said, given the sheer volume of album sales they usually receive, it's probably still a very substantial amount. It's just small when you look in terms of % for royalties per album compared to other labels. Not to mention, they also have solo or sub-unit albums where they split between less members (Lay, Baekhyun, Chen, EXO-CBX, EXO-SC). Just want to end this with, EXO sells because they do it WELL. D.O's movie was the highest grossing film in Korea and all his films have done well in the box office. Suho's musical always sold out. Chen, Baekhyun and Lay's solo album sales are through the roof. EXO-CBX and EXO-SC are incredibly successful subunits, with EXO-CBX having gone on their own arena tour. Lay is currently on his own solo tour and we've lost count on how many brands he endorses. If i'm not wrong Lay is the idol with the highest number of endorsements. Plus the China market is huge which is why I suspect SM is keeping him there so they don't lose market share.

It is very evident that SM has issues. But let us also acknowledge that SM has supported individual/solo activities too. We can argue that it is all business for SM. But which kpop company does charity? Anyways, not many groups get that chance. Every member of EXO has their own solo work; be it singing, acting, musicals, production, or modelling. All of them can flourish further even without being in EXO because they have experience outside of EXO. I do not wish EXO to be disbanded. I want them to continue being EXO for a long time. But, having something to do apart from EXO would help them in the long run. And in this regard SM has done a good job.

Yeah, I agree. They can be EXO forever, but they will not going to be an idol forever. So it’s good that they try other things and become a versatile artist, not just a boy group. In one interview they mentioned that even though they have their own activities outside EXO, after all of it, they will still come together to perform as EXO. ☺️

I still like SM. Every workplace is not good. But there are still positive things in them.
