The animal rears and unstitches like a gruesome doll. The creature’s ribs audibly pop and snap, opening to form an impossible, vertical maw, tongue dragging on the ground, so its spittle sizzles where it lands. The false head of its animal form lolls to the side, and its false animal mouth dislocates to make way for a monstrous goat-pupiled eye which darts between party members. From this amorphous blob, this gore elemental, this Meat Mimic, several bloody tentacles dive into the ground, and you feel the earth tremble as they dart towards you.

A sleeping terror
This monster disguises itself as a livestock and picks off the herd. It sleeps in the barn with the other animals, undetectable. In some instances, it has been known to slaughter the entire flock, leaving some poor peasant wondering why a monster would spare one of its animals, completely unaware that their one surviving animal is the Meat Mimic — oh my goodness!

The bigger picture
I think good monster design informs good stories. So later I will release a short adventure about the Meat Mimic. It's called The Beast of Shitters' Creek.

Three stat blocks, three versions
This is a boss monster,  a solo mob for level 1, level 3 or level 5 parties. The balance could use a little tweaking in parts, but I'm considering these designs to be living documents. If you think any particular numbers need tweaking, feel free to let me know.  JPGs and PDFs attached.
