There's a term that some authors use to discuss what we do - indie publishing. They prefer the term from self-publishing because it better emphasizes what we actually have to do - all the various aspects of publishing, from editing, managing contractors, proofreading, cover design, rights management and marketing.

It's one of the things that, the more time I spent in various author groups, etc, and the more I talk to other authors, I realise is not emphasised enough.

Being a successful indie author is pretty much like launching a small business. No doubt there are (a decent number) of small businesses that succeed without spending the time or effort to get the various things right. But, the vast majority who do it that way end up failing. Often in the first year.

Authors are the same - except many of them fail at the first book or three. They don't pay attention - or refuse - to take business side of the business into account and then wonder about why they're failing. Or their book isn't doing well. Or, in some cases, their book which should be a huge hit, barely scrape by.

Which frustrates me. But... it really has nothing to do with me. And part of the fun thing about being an indie publisher is the ability to tell others to bugger off and leave you alone.

Sometimes, we chose to do things that are less than optimal (business wise) because some things aren't things we want to do. Or refuse to do. Or just don't want to sacrifice to do. I know I have. And... if some random person told me that I'm doing it wrong, well.

Yes. I am.

And that's my choice.
