On Writing (Patreon)

Let's start with something very important to clarify. I publish to make money, I write because I have other goals.

For some people, writing is something they have to do - it's because the stories have to come out. I'm not the same - I have always been telling me stories since I was a kid. One of my earliest memories was watching the road go by and imagining spider-man running alongside the road, jumping over mailboxes and the like and swinging about, with a small silly story behind it. 

Stories and the characters I make up are friends, but I rarely have a need to 'finish' the story. Or, in some cases (like the System Apocalypse and John), I know the ending already. The in-between parts... change. 

The act of writing actually pins down the myriad 'middle' portions of the story, changing them, making them better sometimes. Sometimes worse because somehow, I can't make the grandiosity I see in my mind a reality.

But for me, writing... it's fun. It's to tell a story and in the end, it's to invoke something. I write because I watch and read books that invoke an emotion in me, that stagger me with what they do. Sometimes because it's fun and humorous. Sometimes, because it's touching. And sometimes, it's because it makes me think.

And, I figure, if I can do the same for even one other person... well... I did well.
