This season is hit or miss for a lot of people, but I think there’s still a lot of laughs to be had. The gang shitting on Mac for a whole season when he was fat and now refusing to say anything positive to him when he gets into really good shape is just perfect, and Dennis of course taking it one step further saying he gained weight at the end.

yea i'm one of those who really wasn't feeling this season. the writing feels forced as does all the hamfisted social commentary. a couple funny episodes still. next 2 seasons are better

This episode aired in September 2018. It's hilarious how Cindy's business plan was going well until Mac's Dennis-shaped sex doll arrived and fucked everything up. It's even more hilarious how Cindy easily figured out that the gang had a drunken orgy with the sex doll. Poor Mac, though. He's got a ripped bod and you know it took a ton of effort and time (and drinking a lot of fight milk I guess!) but all he got from both the Dennis sex doll and the real Dennis was a snarky remark: Hey man, did you gain a little weight? As for season 13, I gotta admit it's a bit inconsistent, but it still has some fantastic episodes. Don't you worry, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is (almost) always funny.

Dennis's absence was not a gimmick. At the end of season 12, Glenn Howerton was working on his new show A.P. Bio and was genuinely unsure how much time he was going to have for Always Sunny. He stepped back from the writing and no one was sure how many episodes he was going to be able to appear in. Season 13 came out 2 years before Mythic Quest premiered, so while everyone had acted on the side, this was the first time one of the original 3 writer/stars had to truly split their time between projects. Thankfully they do a better job of that in later seasons.
