Overall, in terms of plot, this is my least favourite of the specials - but I absolutely live for those small moments in Doctor Who and we get a lot of those in this episode. Like you said, JRabbit, that little scene at the end where the Doctor struggles to put into words just how much losing people actually hurts him is brilliant. I also love the moments when he covers up using his sonic by whistling or when he first meets „the next Doctor“ and goes „Creatures from another world… reeeeally?“. I‘ve found that even in the worst episodes of Doctor Who, you can always find such small moments that just somehow make the entire episode worth watching for me. I can maybe shed some light on why there are 5 specials! David Tennant seems to love being on stage just as much as being in front of a camera. So, he got cast as Hamlet for a production of the play by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2008. That was also the year the specials were filmed. Basically, he simply didn‘t have the time to do a full season, so they did five slightly longer episodes as specials instead (all the specials are hour-long episodes compared to the standard 40-45 minutes). So, next up is Planet of the Dead! I really like that one, I think it has some great character dynamics and interactions. The upside of having no proper companion is that the Doctor can meet a new „temporary companion“ each time, so it‘s always a new fun dynamic! Looking forward to your reaction!

I'm with Jeremy, this is my least favorite of the specials. That being said, this episode really made us all think that David Morrissey was going to be the new Doctor once Tennant left. He is most known for Walking Dead but before all that he was a massive actor in the UK so it made sense to us that he's the next Doctor. Just to give a bit of perspective on the specials, David Tennant landed the role of Shakespeare's Hamlet live on stage on the west end. As much as Doctor Who was his dream role, Hamlet was also a dream role for him, but it meant he wasn't available for filming. They sat down and worked out a schedule with him, and worked out that 5 episodes pretty much was all they could manage. So that's the reason for this year of specials. Most American TV shows are 22-24 episodes long, and filmed in a Studio over 6 months with a break in the middle. Doctor who is mostly filmed on location. The production schedule is actually pretty intense. For a 13 episode show, they actually spend 9 months filming with 3 months in post. The 9 month filming schedule is usually 12 hour days, 6 days a week. The actors all say how much they love it, but it's such a drain on them, The production team also say this. Not that it will impact you watching the show but some of the later seasons we had to wait months and even years for the next episode because the crew just couldn't keep up with the demands of such a rigorous schedule and needed to take breaks in between. Hats off to them for being able to stand up and admit that. Not many shows would be so accepting of people pointing that out
