"Does she even like him?" Nope! "Is she just doing this to make him feel better?" Yup! As you noted later, Freaks and Geeks tries to subvert TV expectations for the sake of realism. One example of that is Nick realizing that his rock star dreams aren't actually going to play out; another is the way it portrays the kind of awkward, doomed relationships high schoolers sometimes stumble into. Which doesn't always make for pleasant viewing - but then, high school isn't always pleasant.
