I think it is so important to show that parents aren’t all the same and I’m glad they showed this reaction. They did such a great job at casting the type of people who look like they would have a negative reaction. I saw in an interview that Daniel Levy (David) said that when he created the show he refuses to have anyone hateful be able to identify themselves with any of his characters. He was saying that coming out and finding your identity isn’t an “opportunity for growth” for anyone else and I can see how that also reflected when David finds out Patrick didn’t tell his parents because he offers to just be his friend that night and reassures him that it’s okay to not tell them until he feels ready. I think that whole scene is so valuable and important.

This particular episode is very special to me. I relate with everything Patrick is going through, and how he words his worries about his parents really resonates with me. Daniel Levy has said in interviews that what Patrick was feeling this episode was exactly how he had felt before coming out to his own parents, and he decided to write that into the show. I do wonder how it was like for Dan to act these scenes as David trying to get Patrick through this, when in reality that's exactly what he was going through growing up. Either way, I think Dan did an incredible job in both acting AND writing this episode, and Noah did an amazing job with his acting as well.
