This show has been on my list for a long time, because I've been a fan of Anya Taylor-Joy since Split and I think she's great in everything I've seen her in like Emma and even movies that aren't considered the best like New Mutants and Playmobil: The Movie, which is a movie that exists. But I hadn't gotten around to it, but when it was chosen to be the next show you react to, I started watching it right away so I could watch your reactions. I know a little bit about Chess, when I was younger and was at camp, I wasn't great at making friends because of anxiety issues and one of the counselors taught me chess and checkers, I was better at checkers but I found chess fascinating, so, at least I understand some of what's happening when it comes to the chess matches in the show. Also, that orphanage is terrible, you get brought there, they cut your hair, take your clothes and then burn it apparently, at least in prison they give you your clothes back when you leave, then they put you on pills without any knowledge on if it's necessary for you, if it's going to help you or if it's going to turn 9 year old children into drug addicts. Anyway, great reaction, I look forward to your reactions for the rest of the season.

All the wonderful character build of young Beth, the nuances of her personality, her challenges and her gifts from this rather tragic origin develops so much intrigue for the story going forward. IMHO, this is great storytelling! I would like to make one observation that seems to have gotten lost - the reference to 1967 is at a moment in the future, when Beth is an adult racing to get to a chess match, while the majority of the story takes place from when Beth is only eight at the time of her mother's death, then nine years old as she has been a resident of the orphanage - likely sometime in the early-to-mid 1950's.
