I think you guys missed it, but they had planned to go to Naples in 1860 and accidentally ended up in Cardiff in 1869. The TARDIS (his ship) is supposed to have 6 pilots, so having just one makes his flying of it a bit janky - in these cases sometimes the ship lands in times where unexpected things happen. It does seem like they're constantly just arriving in time periods where they are needed to solve things, but it's also sort of a mixture of the Doctor looking for trouble, and trouble always finding the Doctor because he's made enemies. They do have fun sight seeing in time/space, it's just that those wouldn't make good episodes of TV! So we skip those for the exciting visits. This is a good episode. I do like how they have Rose, who in 2005 is sort of poorish, but also privileged with her looks and skin colour, and she has all these big ideas of how we should treat people and especially treat women, but then by accident treats Gwynth like a kid who can't make her own decisions because she thinks she knows more than her. It's a nice look at feminism and how you can think you're doing the right thing, but also fall into the same traps that you criticise others of.

This episode was the first to make me sort of doubt the Doctors reasoning at times, when he impulsively believes in this creature just because of pity and risked other people's lives who have no choice to save another based on NO evidence. It also makes me like him more as a character as not being completely perfect.
