I always find it hard coming back to this episode. Don’t get me wrong. I think it’s amazing and the mystery and surprisingly creepy story with the Ass Crack Bandit is honestly perfect, but the ending is just the confirmation of the changes that would happen in the show moving forward. I understand that given Chevy’s behavior and toxic relationship with Dan Harmon and the entire cast (aside from maybe Joel McHale), it was kind of inevitable and almost necessary that Pierce would be permanently written off the show. However, Pierce was still my favorite character from the show and the ending really just leaves a sour taste in my mouth. In my head cannon, Pierce was really the Ass Crack Bandit all along and was just doing it to “teach the group a lesson” for another trivial reason. Who knows? Maybe Chevy will be able to mend his relationship with Harmon and the cast and we’ll see him in that potential Community movie. The chances of that happening are nonexistent but I would still love to see that happen in a perfect world.

*not for reading out loud Just a heads up: The coloring in this episode is meant to be dark, but not that dark. I think you guys were right in episode 1 when you were asking why the lighting was so dark. There were moments in this reaction it was hard to see what was happening, so I pulled up hulu on my end, and it was much brighter. It looks like you guys are using Hulu also, so idk what the problem is... but you may want to check the brightness settings on whatever you're recording from.

Love this one. It is actually intended as a send up of David Fincher movies, (SeVen, Zodiac, etc.) To me, the Jeff and Annie relationship definitely seems to mine the X-files well a few times, with the platonic shoulder touching, etc. The scene before Leonard shows up in the hall reminds me of the "hallway scene" in the first X-files movie in it's dynamics. But I won't break that down further so as not to subject you to the extent of my personal 90s obsessions. Love getting Duncan back. My future ex-husband John Oliver does a great evil mastermind turn in that scene with Annie. Good laughs all around.

Pierce's death reveal comes out of nowhere... but I don't believe this is meant to be an insult to Chevy. In this episode, we once again become immersed in the over-the-top world of Community's high concept episodes. Everything feels a little off from reality. It's what makes these episodes so fun. But that sense of surrealism that you get here is abruptly cut short with the news of Pierce's death. The entire plot of the episode, cut short. It just sort of... ends with no resolution. I believe this was done to show that no matter how grand, or dramatic, or important your actions feel at this moment, the death of a loved one will change everything. Death is often sudden, and life changing. Especially with the characters constantly mentioning how unimportant this mystery actually was... his death was reality crashing down on them. Surrealism to Reality. I believe that's why his death is revealed the way it is. Up next: Dr. Farts

I think this episode and this whole season is just Dan Harmon and the writers just liberated and just doing anything and everything they feel like (in a good way). Its incredible to me how they capture the tone of Fincher films while also being silly as hell. And yea I agree that Pierce reveal was really out of nowhere. I'm guessing they may have just seen the question of Pierce as an elephant in the room within the reality of the show and just decided to rip the band aid clean off and say he's gone and lets deal with it. Highlights for me is Troy just being a perfectly traumatized victim and Abed taking a jab at the trope a lot of drama's have used regarding a "detective with an unusual condition" solving crimes, the dean desperately trying to snap his way to getting a call traced always gets me. Also I just love John Oliver and he was always used so perfectly in Community and a underrated comedic actor, also I sometimes forget he was with us since THE PILOT! So he's O.G Community. Can't wait for the next one!

Quick note, it was Garrett who was screaming throughout this episode, same guy as crisis alert from the model UN episode. Neil was the radio host that did some narration throughout.

I loved seeing RJ enjoy the ass crack bandit song because I genuinely love the song and I'll even listen to it from time to time it's pretty catchy, If you recall they actually mentioned the ass crack bandit in season 2 during the episode 'Intro to political science' Annie mentioned in her opening speech that she was going to bring justice to the ass crack bandit that had been terrorizing the campus, also it's never confirmed but I believe Annie is the Ass Crack Bandit as Dan Harmon did say when asked by the cast on the podcast that he thought it was Annie but if even he isn't sure then I guess it's open to interpretation.
