Just so you know, the musical In The Heights, which this is based off of, was actually made in 2005, while Hamilton came out in 2015. I agree more that him going to Puerto Rico wouldn't have truly made him happy, and that it wasn't really a dream that would have worked because of his rose colored glasses for his childhood.

So a few days late, but I have to comment. I saw In the Heights on broadway as an orientation perk when I first went to art school in manhattan back in 2008/2009. I really like the movie, but it definitely lost a bit in translation and the ending felt more earned in the original musical? there were a few cut songs that really built on what was coming and even my first time seeing it totally blind I felt like it completely built to what was coming. usnavi is stuck (a streetlight) and doesn't even really know what he wants. he feels like he needs to go back to the dominican republic because he heard his parents talk so lovingly about it before they died. nina's dad has an entire really beautiful song about how his father tried to force him into the family business and his goal in life was to be a better father to her. her mom is alive and has a role that she shares with abuela. abuela winning the lottery happens early on and by no fault of her own she further pushes usnavi into wanting to go back to the dominican republic. the movie made some different points that i absolutely LOVE (the musical didn't really go into the struggles of being latino in a largely white place or being undocumented). the musical was really at heart about finding a home where you are, and i feel like the ending lost a bit of that heart because the movie tried to make it about more than that. i wish they could have somehow combined both a little better.
