Fun fact: a lot of what Catherine (Moira) is saying in the commercial is improvised. Dan Levy (David) wanted to make sure to properly utilize the awesome cast and would just let them get a vibe for what they were doing and just go.

My impression is that the motel phone system was working fine. Johnny just didn't know to press the blinking button. We saw on the commercial shoot (and will see again) that he likes to seem like he understands how things work, when he really doesn't. (As a successful businessman in the past, he always had "people" to handle such details for him.)
