The moment when Mal kicks Niska's vengeful henchman into the engine is just perfect, especially with the follow-up conversation with the next guy. Being willing and able to pull off a moment like that in the very first episode that aired (thanks to Fox jerking the show around)? I believe you could call that a good omen for what's still to come.

This episode was written as the new first episode after Fox told them the pilot was too grim. and they wanted a lighter tone. It's a controversial opinion, but I think this was ultimately good for the show. The lighter tone is what made it the Firefly that everyone loves. FUN FACT: On this show, any time Mal rides a horse, it's always the same horse. His name is Fred.
