Thanks so much for doing this episode! It would have been a shame to skip it. You probably understand this, but just in case: This DID air complete on NBC in the original run, it is included on the DVDs, and it ran on Hulu and Netflix until they decided to remove it last June. My own choice would be to leave it intact, but to precede it by a clear advisory that lets viewers make an informed choice about whether they want to view it. But I'm obviously not in charge. It's also another example of how much this series can do with a "bottle episode." I love the changed music and the narrations.

Hey guys i am so glad you enjoyed the episode as i knew you would. Would have been a shame if you missed it. Really appreciated the shoutout and i´m always happy to help. And i totally agree with you, the "controversial" part of the episode had, in the context of it all, NOTHING to do with racism. But because of the black facepaint part the algorithm kicked in, and the streaming network had to pull it. I get that. As for the episode itself it was one of my alltime favourites. Like you i was completely engrossed by the story, the game, and the narration. I could see the game unfold in my mind and i didn´t want it to end. Also RJ, mad props for "The Power of Grayskull" I loved He-Man growing up. Btw, Kevin Smith is doing a short series of Masters of the Universe that should be out on Netflix later this year. Would love reactions if you´re up for it. Anyway... Note that in the opening credits of the episode Chevy Case had the drawing of a Troll with his name. Awesome foreshadowing regarding to what he did during the game. 🤣 Loved the reaction as always and i see you in the next one.

Someone mentioned last episode, that more than episode 2x14 is no longer available on Netflix US. As far as i know only 2x14 is missing, but just to be safe the episode count should be as follows: Season 2 = 23 episodes total + episode 2x14 Season 3 = 22 episodes total Season 4, 5 and 6 = 13 episodes each Could someone please check, if all remaining episodes are available on Netflix US, so that JRabbit and RJ don´t miss out? Thanks a lot.

Troy angrily saying "This is why I wanted to play Chutes and ladders!" gets me every time! Also Annie acting out that sex scene is so damn funny. I think Gillian Jacobs acting as Britta is so underrated in this series. She is so damn good and so funny. Her devastation at the death of Kyle the gnome waiter is hilarious. I'm so glad you guys decided to go ahead with this episode given Changs ridiculous "shoe polish" paint. As always this episode is just so damn ambitious for the creator and writers, but they nailed every aspect of it. On to the next one, or as Troy would say..."Huzzah!"

To say that Chang's makeup has "nothing" to do with racism is disingenuous. Not only does Shirley to refer to it as a hate crime but Pierce calls him Al Jolson who is often called "the king of blackface." I personally think it's ok in the context of the show but I can understand why a network would not want to air it. Sometimes things we like are problematic; it's okay to admit that. I'm glad JRabbit and RJ got to see it but honestly it wouldn't be the end of the world if they didn't; Community has several classic episodes in season 2 alone!

Your pronunciation was perfect :) Some observations and fun facts (mostly from the official DVD’s commentary): The network people didn’t like the idea of the episode because it was “too nerdy” and had the unconventional epic cold open – so, of course, the episode turned out to be a fan favorite. Many of Community’s best scenes or episodes are the ones they had to fight over with the “statistics/ratings people”. And the main innovation of the episode is precisely that the game is not the butt of the joke, it’s the epic backdrop to it. Very rare to see a show be able to use the official trademarked name “Dungeons and Dragons” and the PR people from the company Wizards of the Coast were nervous, but the director for this episode Joe Russo knew a guy from the company who was a huge fan of the show, so they got the permission to use the name. Dan Harmon loves Dungeons and Dragons and most of the DnD books we see are his, from the time he regularly played the game. Harmon and the crew were themselves indecisive about how evil Pierce should get and Russo had to convince Harmon not to remove the horrible (but darkly funny) line “Baste your chubby cheeks in tears of gravy!” by reminding him that “your hero’s only as good as your villain”. And yes, the ongoing theme of Pierce being a dick will come to a sort of moment of reckoning, but be patient with it. Chevy played that villain role perfectly, don’t you think? Both the fans and the show’s crew often cite it as one of his best performances. ‘Chilling’ at times, you could say. I love Britta so much, the moments that for some make her annoying just make me love her more, like caring for gnomes in general and the gnome waiter Kyle in particular (RIP Kyle). Glad you noticed the amazing musical score and the way they used it. I hope you don’t mind hearing about the making of the show, ‘cause for some people that ruins it, while others love that stuff. I’ll keep it shorter next time haha

This episode was aired, it was just taken off streaming. And although I am not an expert, I believe dark elves in D&D are usually pitch black or grey skin, white or silver hair and red or purple eyes. Also kinda a funny coincidence, in my college dorm my first year there were 4 Neils on the floor, one that went by Andrew, a Tall Neil, a Fat Neil and a Black Neil.

Loved this D&D episode, and everyone did an amazing job. Character work from Abed, Annie and Britta was Excellent and as always Pierce was horrible but a brilliant villain. Also I loved the narration aspect of this episode and the music was epic.

I hate what they did to pierc's character this season. Pierce used to be an asshole but harmless but now they're making him go too far. Maybe they didn't like that the funniest character was prejudice?

Bisibia

I think it had more to do with Chevy being too similar to Pierce. Made it pretty easy to make him the bad guy... Chase and Harmon did NOT get along.

Oh that's true
