Remember I mentioned that the 3 actors shot a short film on their own camcorder and showed it to FX as a possible pilot for a series? It was basically the first scene of this episode: a guy visits a friend to get his basketball back, and the friend tells him he has cancer. And the guy just wants to get his basketball and get out of there, and he's wondering "How long am I required to stay and talk about cancer?" So after getting approved for a series, they expanded the idea as part of a full episode, and used it here. These are just dreadful people, aren't they? How can they be so entertaining to watch? :)
