This is a long one so get ready. :) Maya Rudolph is brilliant in this. I love the payoff to all of her TV binging and Timothy Olyphant fangirling comments by bringing in actual Timothy Olyphant dressed up like his Justified character, Raylan Givens. It was a double treat for me since I'm also such a massive fan of him and Justified is legit one of my top 10, maybe even top 5, favorite shows of all time. I squealed just as hard as the Judge when Janet made him. I was also moved by Shawn's growth and him finally admitting that he's being so stubborn because he wants to keep playing this game with Michael. I love that Michael understands him and talks Shawn around by finally being able to trick Shawn into facing his feelings with a reverse psychology move. Now, after all of Michael's personal growth, he understands people and demons better than any other demon or celestial around. Lastly, watching Chidi be so confident and in love with Eleanor felt like such a treat after all the recent heartache and separation with those two. I really felt rewarded after their journeys together and individually. The way Eleanor was the one who immediately understood the ethical questions Chidi was pointing out at the beginning of the ep was a real beautiful way to showcase her personal growth. I love that Chidi found her evolution super sexy and was also confident enough to just openly tell her and kiss her right in front of everyone. These two have come so far. On a more serious note, I love the way the show is able to discuss the real world flaws of the current Justice System--especially America’s justice system--through this show about the afterlife. The entire show has been an exploration of personal growth and responsibility as a member of a society, aka What We Owe to Each Other. In addition to that, I think it’s been quietly asking the audience to reexamine how we feel about crime verses punishment. The threat of the Bad Place has worked so well in this show because it just seems incredibly unfair and unjust. Like Eleanor said in the very first season, “This system sucks. What, one in a million gets to live in paradise and everyone else is tortured for eternity?” The show asks us to consider the idea that if people can change for the better, then they deserve the chance to improve and are perhaps owed the support from their community and their governmental system to follow through. I think it’s very telling that they included Jason as a main character in this show. Underneath all the comedy of his character is a deeply tragic life. Jason, along with his father and Pillboi, is very clearly a victim of his poverty stricken environment and a product of the Prison Industrial Complex in the US. I like that this show very subtly has been challenging us to think about such heavy topics that are so relevant right now, considering what’s happening in the real world. Even the creative decision to make Maya Rudolph’s character a “Judge” who holds humanity’s very existence in the balance lends itself to this metaphor for the justice system. I love the way this show handles real world issues/context with its stories. One more ep down and two (since the finale is a two-parter) more to go. Can't wait!
