This is the episode that really crystallizes why Saru made the choice to sacrifice the Tardigrade back in "Choose Your Pain." I mentioned back then that there was a future episode that would explain why Saru is the way he is and this is it. As a prey animal who was born and bred for food, Saru's primary and core motivation is an ever present sense of fear. Sometimes oppression and fear makes people do the worst things rather than the best ones. To deliberately hurt his crewmates and sabotage a mission? It's a hard pill to swallow but this episode really forced Saru to confront the fact that when he's in crisis, he often times chooses the worst responses even endangering or hurting others. Whether he is able to reconcile with that, correct his behavior, and make a positive change is yet to be seen but he definitely would not have been able to move forward until he experienced the kind of rock bottom he does here. It's also interesting to think of how this revelation about Saru's core instincts changes his relationship with Michael. During their fight, Saru brings up Michael's mutiny and Captain Georgiou's death again, revealing that he is harboring a grudge about Michael "taking from him" still. But the situation on Pahvo puts Saru in a similar position as Michael back in episodes 1 & 2. It's not exactly the same but Michael can understand what it's like to believe something so strongly that it transcends your normal morals or behavior. One can only hope that this experience will allow Saru to really start to understand Michael on a deeper level and maybe even come to truly forgive her in a way that he has not been able to before this.
