This is one of my favorite episodes because of the focus on my favorite Disco relationship: Sarek and Michael. Any episode that explores their complicated and messed up family history is a treat for me, tbh. I'm a real sucker for complex family dynamics. In Greek mythology, Lethe is a river in the underworld (Hades). When you drank from it, you would experience total forgetfulness. In some myths, when you died you were supposed to drink from it to forget your earthly life. In other myths a soul only drank from it before they were reincarnated so they'd forget their former lives. In the classical Greek language, the word means "oblivion," "forgetfulness," or "concealment." The title connects to both stories again for this episode just like last ep. What I find most interesting is thinking about how the different definitions for Lethe--forgetfulness and concealment--can connect to multiple levels of each story. When Sarek was injured, one of his greatest shames is exposed to the one person he never wanted to see it. He is so desperate for Michael to never know how much he betrayed and hurt her that he is literally willing to let himself die to "conceal" it. It is only through Michael's persistence that he is forced to face his own choices and her judgement. But, of course, even after his life is saved Sarek is still not ready to truly face what he did to Michael, so he tries to lie that he doesn't remember anything that happened. Michael, on the other hand, won't let him now that the truth has been revealed. In many ways, their relationship takes a hit in this episode when it's revealed that Sarek chose Spock over Michael for the Vulcan Expeditionary Group (which didn't even matter since Spock chose Starfleet anyway). Yet I actually think their relationship had no hope for growth until this secret was revealed. Like Michael says at the end, there are a lot of conflicting emotions between them: love, shame, guilt, duty, resentment, hope, pride, fear... But, I think, all of that was stunted because neither of them was ready to face the truth about each other. That neither of them would ever be the person they wanted. Now, however, they have revealed this painful truth and now their relationship can move forward in honesty and understanding. Rather than relying on both their expectations of each other, Michael and Sarek can see each other for who they really are. Before I move on to the secondary story, I want to point out how both Michael and Sarek struggle to conceal their emotions at different points in the episode. Sarek struggles quite a lot when the other Vulcan starts spouting that prejudiced nonsense about Spock and Michael. Sarek even gets called out on his emotional response of "you ask me to make an impossible choice." He struggles again when trying to hide everything from Michael. He struggles once more in the Discovery's sickbay when being forced to confront that Michael is his daughter and he harmed her immensely growing up. Sarek chooses to retreat back into his vulcan-ness in order to protect himself from the painful truth of his actions...at least for now. Michael struggles to hide her emotions noticeably when she learns that she was rejected from the Vulcan Expeditionary Group and Sarek rebukes her for expressing humiliation. In the end, Michael chooses to no longer conceal her emotions and embrace her humanity as Amanda (her foster/adopted mother) urged her to do. This represents a new start for her free of the things that held her back in her relationships before this.

For Lorca's side of the story, the title could refer to a couple of things. Lorca offering Admiral Katrina Cornwell a drink in order to conceal his mental instability and make her forget why she came in the first place like the Lethe river is meant to do for dead souls. As a counterpoint to the meaning of "forgetfulness" and the idea of leaving the past behind, Cornwell wants to stroll down memory lane with Lorca and he also rekindles their old sexual/intimate relationship in order to distract her from the truth.  There's still "concealment" happening but it's concealment through remembering...or maybe false remembering. I think it's extremely interesting that Lorca looked confused when Cornwell wanted to reminisce about their memorable last drink after a meteor shower. She even asked if he didn't remember. It makes me think of the fact that people's memories are tricky things. How one person remembers an event is different from someone else's memory. Hell, even a person's own memory changes over time. You can never remember something exactly the way it happened, your mind conceals the truth with little edits every time until it's just this side of a lie. Lorca is a master manipulator and everything he does in this episode is just lies stacked on top of half-truths, all meant to conceal his true intentions. Even at the end of the episode, he uses Starfleet regulations with Saru to conceal the fact that he intentionally sent Cornwell into danger or even death. We still do not know what his truth intentions are but with this episode we can see that he is willing to do literally anything to keep them hidden, even betray an old lover and friend.
