We've done over 150 Rewinder episodes, but never one about competitive eating ... UNTIL NOW!!!!! Will proposed this topic assuming no one would want to do it, but I poked at the history a little bit and found it was actually really interesting.

The less you know about this one in advance, the better, but there are a few cool things that'll stick with me:

  • the professional eating circuit is basically astro-turfed. These publicity guys just kept insisting there was a pro eating league until ... there was one.

  • Takeru Kobayashi (who just retired) might legitimately have a case as the most revolutionary participant in any sport. I defy you to find any other competitor in any other realm who moved the goalposts on what was possible in their sport this extremely and this suddenly.

  • Book recommendation: Horsemen of the Esophagus by Jason Fagone

  • We have a vast but pretty consistent library of APM music we use for Rewinder, but the director on this episode, Ryan Simmons, somehow dug up a new track that both sounds perfectly rewinder-appropriate AND hit the exact right note of festive clownery you want for old-timey competitive eating. Inspired stuff. You'll know it when you hear it.

Hope you enjoy! This one won't hit YouTube for a couple weeks.

Secret Base Patreon is in a silly mood this month, first banana peels, now this. Next week on The Annex episode 2: history of the greatest pranksters in sports? 😂 Great job yall

never thought I would see a Rewinder about the Nathan's contest

For a similarly revolutionary contestant I could point to Cheez from NES tetris, who invented a new way of holding the controller. On November 29, 2021, he pushed the world record from 1.6M with an alleged 1.7, to 2.3M in a single Beamonesque game. And then other players started copying his strategy, and well, the current WR is 16.2M. So over 2½ years the record has increased tenfold in a game released in 1989. I'd add there's a difference though: the distance ahead of people who haven't significantly trained for the event. I have no doubt I could eat like 16 hot dogs, I've had 8000 calories in a day before without even trying. (In fact I was trying to lose weight but kept binge eating due to depression; I'm doing better now.) Whereas 1M points in NES used to be a legendary accomplishment even for top pros and well beyond the capability of normal people (I've played a lot of Tetris but my PB is about 120k.)

So hyped. Also, I commented before watching, but I just finnished. That was INCREDIBLE. Rewindind all the way to the Greeks and Romans must be a new record, right? 😂

Skellingtor

i'm so proud of you son

Seth Rosenthal

you know what... I think so. we gotta do better. i want to rewind to the dawn of time. -s

I belive in you Seth, I'm sure there's a way you could go back to at least the dinosaurs

This is the kind of stuff I sub to this patreon for. Ty!

Bryan R. Powers

Jamie Loftus would be proud, SB - which makes me even more proud of the content that you produce! Well done! (Also, shoutout Loftus' book Raw Dog for even more hot dog goodness!)

delightful rewinder i'm so glad i subscribed i think the newspaper clipping at 5:36 about nakajima might have been misinterpreted though? it reads to me like he might have tried hot dogs before but just never in a competitive venue

Seth Rosenthal

yeah, you're definitely reading that right. i swear i got that detail from a different piece (not that particular newspaper asset), but now i'm struggling to retrace my steps. -s

Sam Aronow

I think it's worth noting that Joey Chestnut is the most American name possible for this situation.

Ryan Swen

Shout out to Seth's accurate pronunciation of Nagano and Nagoya!

Lance Tankman

For what it's worth, Kobayashi claims to have beaten the bear during rehearsal. I believe Kobayashi.

Myiic

This is why I sub to the patreon, I don't think I've ever seen a video on hot dog eating

John Hopwood

I never would've guessed we'd get a Rewinder on one of the biggest rivalries in competitive eating, but I'm very happy to see it! 🔥🔥🔥 content like always

Jackson

So funny when Joey chestnut was in the barstool trivia league this year. Played like 3 games and I don’t think he got one question right. A true American hero - meat head

roffmo

I watched it live on TV. Wasn't especially exciting You can never really tell you're passing through history

please do James Conrad's tying shot at the disc golf world championship

Some of these newspaper headlines are awesome. "Jumping the bun." 😂

Richard Ha

Seth's Japanese pronunciation in this is superb.

Chris Dimaculangan

coming back to this after new headlines this afternoon to say that it's wild that both of these incredibly iconic competitors have now been banned from this contest

Frink Zippi

i learned about the MLE's existence earlier this afternoon, and this is already a scathing rib of its astro-turfed pageantry after recent news. looove this venture into the ESPN8 side of sports! next stop: the high-stakes drama of cornhole 👀

Efren Echavarria

Just watched the 30 for 30 on this and it really did show how much of a xenophobe George was overplaying that Kobayashi, the man responsible for putting the contest on the map, was a period of darkness. What a huge jackass.

Adam Sell

Apropos of nothing, "Horsemen of the Esophagus" is a brilliant title for a book.

Colin Burdett

Very relevant as he has been banned for eating vegan hot dogs

Forrest P

Now Netflix has picked up a hot dog eating contest with the two of them. Nathans is in shambles.

Brandon Boyer

Even more relevant Rewinder now that Netflix announced Chestnut vs Kobayashi in September!

Alex Wei

Excited to watch this! As for the "most revolutionary participant in any realm" claim, how about Dick Fosbury and/or Debbie Brill, the pioneers of the modern high jump technique (known as the "Fosbury Flop" and/or the "Brill Bend")? Or, in the realm of NES Tetris, Christopher "Cheez" Martinez, who invented the "rolling" method that immediately allowed players to achieve previously unimaginable scores and levels?

Danny K

Kobayashi is a true American Hero even if he's from Japan :')

Ian Urbina

Another excellent history of competitive eating can be found in "Eat This Book" by Ryan Nerz, which features blurbs on the back cover from competitive eaters who ate the book.
