Art Q&A for this week: Q: How do you usually arrange poses and proportions in three-dimensional space before linework? Do the figures get arranged first with the background being built around them or does the scenery come first with the figures being placed within it? A: I usually start with the figures since my mind most often pictures people first. Then I begin to sketch the background around them and tweak my sketches till it looks right. I have been trying to start with backgrounds first more recently and it feels much different, but I think it will help with setting the scene. This is much easier with digital where I can set it on another layer. Traditional ends up with a lot of messy lines everywhere.
