We never see Starlight Glimmer's mother, so I'm headcanoning that it's none other than Glory, of G1 MLP fame. Glory possessed the extraordinarily rare power to grant wishes! Warmhearted, selfless, clever, and kind, Glory was greatly beloved by her family and community. Her abrupt, unexpected death factored heavily into Starlight's unhealthy and obsessive attachment style (*cough*Sunburst*cough*), as well as the surly rebellious anger that plagued her teen years. Firelight has never gotten over losing his wife, and spent much of Starlight's childhood spoiling her and drowning her with love so she wouldn't be too poorly affected by the loss of her mother.....this did not work. As Starlight is the last fragment of his family, Firelight greatly dreads accepting that she's grown up and doesn't need him as much anymore.

Starlight meanwhile acts out her longing for a mother by dutifully, almost desperately, playing the role of a mother herself. First to her cult followers, and later to Midnight Abyss. Much like her father before her, Starlight coddles and controls her daughter because she's terrified of being abandoned. Poor Glory remains a ghost that haunts her small family...... and it is after her that Midnight Abyss (Morning Glory) is named.

What are some examples of Starlights obsessive attatchment styles?

Were her attachment issues ever a problem with her relationship with Subset (or any partner)?

Starlight is insecure in many of her relationships, even in the show. She latched into Sunburst hard enough that his leaving was enough for her to justify forming a cult and straight up trying to murder several ponies. She forms unhealthy attachments to her cult followers and uses brainwashing and intimidation to prevent them from leaving her. She leans hard on Twilight and becomes anxious when Twi isn't around to guide her, often to the point of panic attacks. In my story, her attachment to Midnight is deep but shaky, due to Starlight's fear of abandonment, she tightens her grip around Midnight the further away her daughter pulls. Deep inside Starlight there's a little filly that doesn't understand why her mom had to go away, and this trauma affects nearly all of her relationships.

Yup! It took a LOT of reassurance and bonding to calm Starlight's fears that Sunset was going to get tired of her one day and leave through the mirror portal. Starlight has learned to trust Sunset, but the real glue that bonds them tight is codependency. Their marriage is functional, but it's got cracks underneath, most of which affect Midnight.

Ah... Glory. I can see why Midnight’s name is so much of an issue for Starlight. Doesn’t make it okay in the slightest but I understand that it could be some kind of underlying pain

Omg I love this!

How did Glory die if I may ask?

lopoddity

Her wish-granting magic damaged the magical pathways within her horn and cerebral cortex. Following a holiday festival where Glory cast magic finale fireworks for Starlight and the neighborhood foals, she collapsed suddenly from a brain bleed. Although Firelight and Starlight remained at her bedside, Glory never regained consciousness, and died a few days later.

I really like Glory just by looking at her! She seems so sweet and endearing.

Oof... Is Starlight refusing to call her daughter by her new name related to this, then?

lopoddity

Yup. She and Sunset took lots of care to pick out the perfect name for their foal....a proud, noble name with meaning significant to both mothers. Starlight is very hurt and upset by Midnight rejecting it, and she and Sunset remain steadfast in their belief that Midnight will come around and accept her name and destiny, once she's done with this silly little rebellious phase.

Midnight Abyss, flipping off God: you really just HAD to give me two MOMS who both had MOMMY ISSUES, didn't you? Never thought this could backfire?

lopoddity

I mean if Midnight’s looking for some variety of the fatherly persuasion, there’s also grandpa Firelight, who is a horrible smothering cuddlebug with boundary issues, and good ol grandpa Sunspot, Sunset’s dad, who is.....not there. Because he divorced Stellar and peaced out when Sunset was young. Free mommy and daddy issues for everyone! :D
