more earth pony notes

Ponies, like horses from our world, are a matriarchal species. Even before the Sisters rose to power, pony herds each demonstrated a hierarchy of rank, led by a dominant individual, typically a mare. Though modern Equestria is fully egalitarian when it comes to gender, earth ponies cling the most to the traditions of the past, and most earth pony families follow their respective matriarch (typically the oldest, wisest mare, often the grandmother). Ponies reflexively look to mares for leadership and guidance (be warned doing that with Granny Smith tho, she's a little nuts)

Celestia is the ultimate matriarch. She is the favored princess among earth ponies, because she is the bringer of sunlight, which sustains all living things. In some circles, Celestia is revered as Queen of the Harvest. Tributes are often crafted in her honor, in the hope of a bountiful crop, or safety during foalbirth.

Earth ponies are the longest-lived of all ponies, and there's tale of some individuals living for centuries. Granny Smith (formerly Annie Apple) is older than Ponyville, and still as apt to go wrangle a timberwolf for fun.

Love the pony breakdowns! Are you going to do one on the alicorns? Like does Twilight pick up any earth pony or pegasus traits when she ascends?

I never thought I'd say this about anyone, Miss Oddity, but your mastery of lore rivals that of Lauren Faust herself.

Love how you've incorporated actual horse behaviour in this! I think most people get confused since cartoons, like Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmarron, have stallions/geldings in charge. Probably a Western Society move.

Random question, but have you ever watched the series on Cloud the stallion, hosted by Ginger Kathrens? I learned so much about wild horses from her, and her videos are so relaxing.

Love this!! I also like to think that herds are still very common with earth ponies, much more so then then the other races (though bat ponies have their colonies). Herds can be anything from a small family of multiple romantic partners and their foals, to huge extended herds like the Apples that raise all their generations under one roof, and still retain very strong bonds with family members that live elsewhere.

That guy

Love it.

From the picture alone, I thought you were about to tell us that these two were somehow related, or use to hang out. But just metaphorically implying how they're in the same vein of leadership is way better! Also interesting, but sensible, to see how Celestia's relationship is strongest with the Earth tribe.

.....so I got thinking looking at this picture some more....I'm not gonna imply that Celestia and Annie Apple once had a fervid secret affair for a while but I am going to strongly hint at it very obviously. And Granny Smith, even in her golden apple years, will always hold a special little spot in the sun queen's heart.

*extension to my first hc) Other examples of extended herds are the Pears (rivalries and fueds between herds are often long, ugly, and bitter and taken very seriously), the Pies, and the Carcharodons (who stand out as being strongly patriarchal despite the MANY mares in their families)
