notes on Marina and Wave (from my tumblr):
-Marina is the daughter of Coco Pommel. Coco was well past her prime child-bearing years and had kinda assumed the the odds of her ever having a foal were next to zero. Although Coco was flabbergasted when she came up pregnant, it was love at first sight the second she got to hold her teeny Rina.
Marina’s father is Svengallop, but they’ve never met. When Coco found out she was pregnant, she sent a letter to Sven…..who sent back a very large check, to be used however Coco wanted, so long as the “problem” disappeared, and neither she nor the foal ever contact him again. Coco got the hint, and never tried to involve him in her daughter’s life.
-Marina comes from a very wealthy background. Paired with her social anxiety, she had a bad habit of trying to “buy” friendship, that is, casually purchasing ridiculously expensive and elaborate gifts for ponies she is trying to befriend, and seeing nothing wrong with it. A few weeks after she met Wave Rider, she bought her an expensive all-terrain dune buggy stocked with three new surfboards….and didn’t understand why Wave was standing there blushing and stammering, “Holy shit, Rina, I can’t accept this”. Wave eventually manages to nip Marina’s “friendly” spending…..although Marina does insist on treating Wave to a fancy meal or spa day every now and then.
-As a marine biology student, Marina is a big fan of Bruce (”Wavey, your father is the Bruce Carcharodon?? I’ve read all his published journals cover to cover!”). Bruce, while initially hostile to the idea of his daughter dating anyone, was eventually quite charmed by the little mare, and they love talking bio together.
-Marina was never intended to be a long-term partner for Wave. She is Wave’s first crush and first girlfriend, but they’re only maybe sixteen when they start dating. Young and dumb and trying to navigate the exciting, terrifying waters of a new relationship. There’s a lot of shy, sweaty hand-holding, a few clumsy, sweet kisses, nights out on the beach stargazing…..but Marina is from Manehatten, and was only meant to spend a summer in Ponyville. When the time comes for her to return, she and Wave try to maintain a long-distance relationship, scheduling visits and writing letters….but their relationship does eventually draw to a close. Perhaps an ugly break-up, especially on Wave Rider’s part. What follows is the first time Wave ever gets rip-roaring drunk, and needed to be hushedly tended to by young Finn and Oddball. She later got a touching “sorry sweetie, sometimes love just doesn’t work out” speech by her tough Auntie Phoenix, of all ponies.
Although Marina and Wave end on an abrupt note, after some time passes, the rift between them heals, and they reach out and become friends again. They still visit each other now and then, and remain close friends~
