AOS is not subtle about which side of the fence it sits on, nor is it cagey about comparisons to real life issues, and I love it so much for that!

Same. The depressing thing is that, when this episode aired back in early 2016, the image presented here of weekend warriors, dressing up in tactical gear and playing soldier, felt kind of silly. Everything that has happened in the real world since late 2016 has made me sit up and take more notice of these kinds of far right hate groups. Even as sanitized as it is for network TV, I tend to view the Watchdog stuff in AoS through a whole different lens now.

Context. It's important. So remember last season when Robert and "the real SHIELD" took over Coulson's base? They did that out of fear of aliens. Specifically the fear that Coulson's impure alien blood compromised him and made him untrustworthy. They were fearful and insulting toward Daisy for the same reason. Where did this sentiment come from? It came from the Battle of New York, aka the Chitauri invasion, which is much more analogous to Pearl Harbor than 9/11. Think about the effect that had on the world -- discovering that 1) aliens exist and 2) they want to conquer Earth. Think about the worldwide fear in the aftermath of that event. And remember that at first both Mac and Bobbie agreed with the real SHIELD's point of view. Then in season 3: Inhumans. People with powers start popping up all over the world and it becomes widely known that these people are also part alien. The Watchdogs represent the extreme reaction in that they want to exterminate aliens but Mac's brother represents the average person who is fearful and just happy someone is doing something. My point being one of the many reasons I love this show is they think through the details of the wider MCU world.
