Kinda mean, but I'm glad you're so affected by this because god, SAME. Despite rewatching most of Merlin multiple times over the years, I have never rewatched this finale until now. I was 15 when it came out and it hit me so hard, plus I was Big Mad about Arthur and Gwaine dying, and boy did I hold onto that grudge. I've enjoyed your reactions so much though, and despite crying my way through this finale again, I'm glad to have rewatched it. Thank you for that. It is a devastating end, but beautifully done. I actually really agree with their decision to have the scene between Mordred and Arthur very early on in the episode and then spend most of the rest focusing on the aftermath, particularly Merlin and Arthur. Just like the scene between Mordred and Arthur itself, they made the episode quiet rather than dramatic, and I think that was a good choice. For me it hits harder that way, rather than dragging out a big intense battle - which we've seen before, anyway. The writers clearly knew that the relationships, especially Merlin and Arthur, are the core of this story and wanted to go out focusing on that. Quite right. And honestly, it's SO sad but SO beautiful. Taking the time to allow for a whole arc of Merlin telling Arthur about his magic and Arthur's immediate response to questioning and realising just how much Merlin has been there for him to the sincere words and affection right at the end - personally I like their relationship as platonic with emotional intimacy, and seeing sincere affection between two guys in a non-romantic way is very meaningful to me, so I love that - just feels like the absolute right way to end it. But it hits so damn hard. It's emotional the whole way through, and then a gut-punch when Arthur does die. But I adore that they didn't do a big Manly death, they had Arthur want to be held by his friend and being sincere. I love it so much, especially for a decade ago when young me didn't see much of that. But still, I am BIG MAD about Gwaine. Him dying at all, but especially that he died without knowing the truth about Merlin, and thinking he failed his friends and Camelot. I think Gwaine cared about Merlin more than almost anyone; there were a few scenes over the course of the show where we saw that, and he would drop everything to help Merlin. I feel like he deserved to know the truth, like Lancelot did, and it bugs me that he never did. He deserved better. But I do love that his bond with Percival was clear in this last episode, though it's so sad seeing Percival in that scene where Gwen is declared sole ruler, barely able to speak the words because he's just been through so much. I do feel like my connection to Gwen as a character lessened a little after she became queen. Her story had to go that way, of course, but I definitely felt more attached to and invested in her earlier on. I think that once she became queen they had done the main thing with her character and, other than the Brief Evil Time, they didn't know what to do with her. Still, Angel nailed the role and I did feel her grief about Arthur. And despite it all, I do mourn Mordred. He's such a tragic character. To an extent, even Morgana is. It feels like different paths were possible for both of them, whatever "destiny" says, and that makes me really feel the loss of who they were - the Morgana of series 1, who stood up to Uther so much more than Arthur did, and the Mordred who was genuinely loyal to Arthur and Merlin and would have been forever had things gone differently. Ultimately, I'm so glad to have rewatched this show with you - thank you so much to the folks who originally requested it! This show was a big deal for me all those years ago; for a while, Saturday evenings were Merlin - short ad break - Doctor Who, and that was the BEST. I can totally see why this show stuck with people and the fandom is still alive. Merthur is right up there among some of the most popular ships of all time, and fandom content is still being made over a decade later. There's plenty of fan videos on YouTube (I particularly love the out-of-context stuff and dragonlcrd's channel) and social media. So this fandom ain't going anywhere any time soon. One thing I will say - you've seen Supernatural and I believe Sherlock and now baby brother Merlin; I know there's no chance of it any time soon, but I will be here in like 5 years requesting Doctor Who lol. Anyway... Thank you so much for reacting to this show, it's so good to still see people getting into it. I'm glad you enjoyed it (other than the devastation) and I agree, it would be awesome if it was ever got anything new - even a one-off reunion episode. I don't see it happening, but hey, fandoms have achieved more with less in the past. We're powerful creatures.

I love this comment so much - I so so agree with literally everything you’ve said here! I also totally agree about Doctor Who. I know there might be some reservations at starting such a big show (both because of its literal quantity and its notoriety!) but I can really see Shelley getting into it - hopefully one day we might be able to persuade her :)

Merlin's older form is not his true form. It was his last attempt at keeping his secret. The last scene is showing that Merlin has been waiting for Arthur for 1500 years. Iv'e always felt that the most horrible thing you can do to someone is give them hope. Look at you. You went the whole last episode with the hope that one last quest would restore Arthur to full health. Only to have your hope be ripped away. Imagine how Merlin feels waiting for his king (read boyfriend). Countless wars and disasters. World war one and two. Merlin's just waiting for Arthur to raise up and save the world. Yet time after time hes disappointed. Do you understand the final scene now?
