Dean DID try to get Adam out of the cage once. In S6 episode 'Appointment in Samarra' he asked Death OG (and the only IMO) to break both out, but Death OG told Dean he could only have "Sam's soul or Adam's". I love that Rowena is now Queen of Hell after her son. If the guys can trust anyone else in that capacity, it's her. And I bet she does a better job at it than Crowley - as much as I love him, he wasn't the best ruler of Hell, as he hated being there. Yes, both Light (God) and Dark (Amara) need to exist. Not only did Cas confirm in S11, but we saw what happened when God was dying. The sun was dying at the same time. Amara also confirmed that once the balance of power shifted into total darkness after God's death, that it would be the end of everything,, even her. So the best thing to do is to cage him, where he can't do anymore harm. But leave Amara out in the world, as long as she's not being destructive.

Wish they did reference that Dean's biting response of "Mike" was anger from his experience with the other Michael who sucks worse than this one does. Might have helped a bit as well as not just gloss over since they blew that arc up last season.

Dean did try in season 6! The next cage event in season 11 was Sam visiting only Lucifer and not Michael for no reason other than plot, he went alone without his bro or angel, then Cas said yes with no heads up to the boys that he wanted to do it.
