Republican in those days meant people on the political left. Like me. Republicans supported freedom and democracy during the Spanish Civil War. Just one example.

Ugh, the WEEK I have had, that it took me this long to get here. I remember leaving the theater with a huge smile on my face after this. I'm glad they got just about everyone in the cast to return. Yes, I would have loved to see Rose & Atticus and Mr. Mason and Spratt. And, to a far lesser extent, Danker, if only as a foil for Spratt. But it's hard to have too many characters crowded into a movie. I know that both Brendan Coyle and Matthew Goode had conflicts in their schedules so they weren't available much for filming. They scattered Bates's scenes enough so you didn't quite notice and brought Henry in near the end. By the way, I love that his and Mary's daughter is named Caroline, which I choose to think is in honor of Henry's friend Charlie who died in the crash. One bit I think they could have cut was the tedious Princess Mary thing. I just don't think it added anything to the general story to focus on the unhappy marriage of a new character. By the way, Lady Bagshaw (the real-life Mrs. Carson!) was a fictional character. Pretty much everyone is except the royals. LOVED the Thomas Barrow storyline! I found the scene at the speakeasy to be so moving, the way he was just overwhelmed about being in a room full of gay men being openly gay. And oh lordy, his new boyfriend is a cutie. I don't mind Tom's change in character so much. Given the circumstances of his life it wouldn't make sense for him to still be a firebrand. Not if he wants a peaceful life at Downton for himself and Sibby. He'll still argue his principles but in a mild way because both he and Robert know they're never going to change the other. The movie decided to pretend that Carson's tremors never existed. They could have included a line of dialogue about how they're not troubling him as much as they used to, or else a scene in which Andy and Molesley were reminded that Carson would oversee but that he couldn't directly serve food or wine, but they just ignored it, which is a little annoying. And there was plenty of sniffling in the theater during the scene at the end with Mary and Violet. Loved the line about how Mary is destined to take up the reins and will be Downton's "scary old lady." She'll do it beautifully. I only saw the second movie once, so I look forward to watching it again with you!
