Another great reaction as always! Yes you’re so right on both counts, about the show being so paint by numbers, and that Morgana and Gwen are the worst assassins ever, Gwen has every opportunity to kill Arthur, she doesn’t need to hire some assassin to do it! The very samey formula is one of the show’s main flaws I think. It’s been present for a while but I always feel it is particularly evident and frustrating in this last season, which is why I feel so mixed on it. The characters have changed and grown so much, the show feels generally much more adult than it once was, so why do so many episodes follow the same plot again and again?! It’s especially obvious when they actually *do* have an episode which has lasting consequences and isn’t just about some plot around killing Arthur, like the recent episode about magic. Episodes like that highlight just how much better the show is when tackling other issues and storylines. I think the writers needed to be braver and bolder, and really go for it much more in terms of plot when writing this show, *especially* in its last season. That being said, I do like this episode more than most. I think the relationship between Merlin and Daigle (however you spell his name) is rather sweet and contains a nice little arc for him, I’m always impressed when writers get me to care about a character within only one episode, and also the comedic moments with Arthur, do a lot to bolster this episode up for me. And again I think Angel Coulby is such a good villainous Gwen that I kind of enjoy that part of the episode too. But overall you’re right, a very average episode. Obviously I can’t say anything to your wonderings about the show’s end, but I will say, I am dying to see how you react to the last few episodes, whatever the reaction may be!
