A great review as ever. If you remember back to the first episode of series 3 and the fact that Morgause using just one mandrake root, caused Uther to basically lose his mind. Then you think that Gwen has been surrounded by mandrake roots and also shut up in darkness, with all the psychological torture as well, it's hardly surprising what happens. Although it's interesting that we see some defiance from Gwen right at the end, then suddenly she is under Morgana's control. The question I am considering is, did she use a spell on Gwen as well at the very end? I know what you mean about the tears as well, we don't really know if they are genuine or not. That's pretty messed up. I loved all the impenetrable forest stuff and Queen Maab and then seeing Merlin using a new skill. For once like you say it was an actual clever plot by Morgana. Even if it's pretty messed up as well.

Just caught up with this one - great reaction as always! I like this episode, particularly the plot line and scenes with Morgana and Gwen. It really shows the truly twisted nature of Morgana now, and the scenes with the mandrake and Gwen’s psychological distress/torture is really well done, I think the performance of Gwen’s actress is great, and you’re right, it really gets across just how dark and disturbing this situation is, particularly when Morgana starts positioning herself as Gwen’s saviour and one true friend. Also to answer your questions around the Morgana stuff - you’re right, we don’t know fully what happened yet. As you said, we’ve only had flashes or hints about what happened at this point. But she did say before that it was a 2 year imprisonment, which had to have happened in between season 4 and season 5 - since there is actually a 4 year gap between them! It’s why in the first episode of season 5, Arthur and everyone, were all surprised to hear of Morgana, since she hadn’t been seen for a few years. We will find out exactly what happened in the future! It’s a shame that they killed off Elyan in this episode. I’m not sure if I quite agree with it as a writing move, but I put it down to the writers wanting to continue to establish the darker and more somber tone of this last series, and show to us that this show has stakes. We certainly feel very far away from season one now!
