Yes the Colonists could start the colonization anytime. It's just that the syndicate tried to buy time through a common project with the colonists to create these hybrids. And the colonists want these hybrids as a slave race. Hybrids are immune to the black oil, so they would be the only ones to survive colonization, along with the syndicate members and their families. The reason why they gave them family members is that the aliens needed them as an insurance, that the syndicate doesn't betray them. Now that the syndicate is dead, the colonization plans are still going on, but without human collaboration. Hard to say if this makes anything better. Guess not. Because now no one is holding them back anymore. However, there's everything in those 2 episodes to understand what is going on and there isn't really more about it. They kinda ended a storyarc here. The syndicate arc that began with season 3. Chris Carter once said, that he wanted to come this storyline to an end, because it got too massive, dialogue heavy and complex to carry it on. He wanted the show to get rid off some baggage. Now Mulders remaining quest is about a coming alien invasion and the search for his sister. By the way, your more than halfway through. The Patient X twoparter in season 5 was the halfpoint, depending on the number of episodes.

These two episodes are really great! So much happened and, of course, so many new questions. The modic kiss between Diana and Mulder used to give me so much anger! But all I see now is she kissing him, a static Mulder, not kissing back...so it´s fine for me LOL...loved the reactions guys!! Thanks for that!
