Seeing Anna let herself cry as Bates held her was just such a RELIEF. It was like something unclenched inside me that I didn't realize was clenched. I didn't love the "higher and holier" comment because I find the idea of her violation making her "better" in any way rather distasteful, but that's a sentiment that would hit differently in the 1920's, so I don't blame him for saying it or find it surprising that Anna would find it comforting. With all his flaws, I love Robert. Yes, he's stubborn and he takes his privilege as a divine right, but that's very believable for a nobleman of that era. Honestly, if you went back in time and told the story of Downton Abbey to someone in 1920's England they'd find him to be shockingly liberal and emotionally expressive. Jimmy is a DICK, that's all there is to it. He has one redeeming quality and it's huge, and that's the fact that he became friends with a gay man, which very few men of that time would do. But in every other aspect he is just a selfish, arrogant little twerp who enjoys being cruel to Alfred. Poor Edith. And that's all I'm saying about that for the moment.
