Rosanne Stewart

You know, Alfred is generally treated as a positive character but he is often an absolute DICK to Daisy. He is perfectly aware she has feelings for him, and not only does he talk TO her about how he likes Ivy, he even jokes about the whole thing. Daisy says, "Sometimes people come round," and he grins at her and says, "You hope." Rose was just shutting down young Sam as quickly as she could by making up a fictional fiance. It really annoyed me that either Robert or Cora would believe that Anna would be jealous or vindictive against anyone. She put up with O'Brien for years without acting underhandedly in any way and now for some reason she'd supposedly targeting Edna? By ruining Lady Grantham's favorite scarf? Please. Thomas just wants an ally on staff who's in aposition of influence over someone in the family, like O'Brien was. And oh, Mr. Bates has ice in his veins sometimes. The way he can so smoothly and confidently manipulate the world to arrange itself so that Anna will stop being unhappy. It's both adorable and a little intimidating. As for Mary's inheritance, the law says that she can't inherit the title. The Countess of Grantham only has that title because she's married to the Earl of Grantham. And as far as property (the estate) goes, a daughter couldn't inherit over a son, but a wife can inherit from her husband. At least, that's my understanding of it, but I'm ready to be corrected if I'm wrong.

welcome to the complexity of rooting for Thomas haha

I think with the inheritance Mary couldn’t originally inherit the money or estate because Robert’s father tied it to the title when Robert married Cora (the entail). She can’t get the Title but she could have gotten the money and estate. That’s why they were trying to break the entail in the beginning of the series. But Matthew didn’t tie his money or his portion of the estate to the title so he was free to will it to her.
